Introduction
Established in 1930, GIPE is a premier research and training institute in economics and allied disciplines. The Ph.D. programme (Economics, Agricultural Economics, Population Studies; also supporting allied areas such as Public Policy, Sociology, Law & Economics, Sustainable Development) is applied in nature, encouraging topics relevant to contemporary socio-economic issues. Coursework of 16 credits (one semester) is mandatory before registration confirmation. DR. D.R. Gadgil Library hosts ~2,80,000 documents with extensive journal/database access.

Eligibility Criteria
- Master’s in relevant discipline with minimum 55% (5% relaxation for reserved categories).
- OR equivalent foreign qualification.
- Direct entry via 4-year bachelor’s requires ≥75%.
- Plus valid UGC-JRF or UGC-NET score.
Admission Process
- Apply online via GIPE portal; submit proposal.
- JRF holders: Interview only.
- Non-JRF: NET score (70%) + Interview (30%).
- Foreign candidates: Interview only.
Research Proposal & Interview
- Proposal (max 2000 words) required.
- Interview schedule shared via email.
Academic Schedule
- Interviews: Early September 2025.
- Coursework begins: September 15, 2025.
Programme Duration
- Minimum 3 years, maximum 6 years (extendable as per UGC rules).
- Maternity/child-care leave available.
Part-time Ph.D.
Open to working professionals with NOC. Coursework must be completed on campus.
