Introduction: IIT Jammu PhD Admission 2025-26 Special Drive

Online applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. program at IIT Jammu through a special admission drive. This drive is exclusively for candidates belonging to the SC/ST/EWS/OBC-NCL/PwD category. General Category Candidates need not apply for this special drive PhD Programme. This provides an excellent opportunity to join the Institute for the Academic Year 2025-26. The following departments are participating: Bio Sciences and Bio Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, Materials Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and Interdisciplinary Program (IDP*).

Categories of Admission

The applicants for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall be classified under the following category:

  • Institute Research student/candidate (Full Time)

Eligibility Criteria: Regular (Full time)

Applicants with any of the following qualifications shall be eligible for application to a full time PhD program at the Institute.

  1. A Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology along with a good academic record. OR
  2. Master’s degree in Science (with a good academic record) and a valid GATE / UGC-CSIR NET (JRF or LS) /GPAT/NBHM/ICMR (JS) / ICAR (JS) or equivalent qualification in the relevant area tenable for the year of registration. OR
  3. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with an exceptional academic record and a valid GATE score in the eligible discipline. The Candidate should have a minimum of 8.0 CGPA during B.Tech program.
  4. Exemption for GATE under schemes as agreed by IIT Council for students of NITS/IITS/ IIITS/ IISERS/ IISc may be acceptable.
  5. UGC-CSIR NET Lectureship (LS) can be used as selection criteria if candidate qualifies interview cum selection process at the department level and Institute fellowship will be granted to such candidates.

IDP Specific Criterion

For IDP based Research Areas (Project) there is separate eligibility criterion in addition to the general criterion mentioned above.

Application Fee

The Application Fee is non-refundable. Fees are charged per department applied to.

The candidates can deposit the requisite application fee by using net banking or debit/credit card facilities. The Fee will not be accepted through any other mode. Additional charges will be applicable as per the rule of the concerned bank.

The table below outlines the fees payable per semester for the Ph.D. 2025 Batch. Note that *Annual Fee is payable only during the Odd Semester*. Mess charges are separate.

  • ^ Semester fee for Regular students includes Residential Charges of approximately ₹19,330/-.
  • * Annual Fee component includes an Insurance Fee, which may increase annually.
  • Fee components other than tuition fee will increase annually at the rate of 7%.
  • Mess charges will be notified separately and shall be paid accordingly.
  • A Thesis fee of Rs. 5000/- shall be charged at the time of submission of the thesis.

The hard copy of the application need not be submitted. The application in any other mode/form will not be accepted.

Detailed Eligibility for IDP Projects

  • IDP: Energy Storage Materials for Li and Na Ion Batteries: Candidates must have an MTech/MSc degree with a valid GATE score or CSIR UGC NET qualification.
  • IDP: AI/ML analysis of reactor, Reactor kinetics: Basic undergraduate/master degree of the candidates should be from Mechanical / Chemical / Aerospace engineering or from Physics with a background in thermodynamics and nuclear physics.
  • IDP: Development of High performance lithium batteries: A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology (Materials/Metallurgical/Chemical/Polymer/Mechanical, or related) with a proven understanding of electrochemistry and/or battery technologies, and a strong academic record. OR A Master’s degree in Science (Physics, Chemistry, or related fields) with a demonstrated background or proven understanding of electrochemistry and/or battery technologies, along with a strong academic record.

Other Important Instructions

Mandatory Documentation and Instructions

  • Category Certificates: Candidates belonging to OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST/PwD should supply appropriate category certificates issued by the central government only.
  • OBC-NCL: The benefit of reservation will only be available to OBC-NCL only. The OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate must be issued in the latest Financial Year in the prescribed format and uploaded in the ONLINE application (Format attached as Annexure A).
  • EWS: The Income & Assets certificate must be issued in the latest Financial Year in the prescribed format and uploaded in the ONLINE application (Format attached as Annexure B).
  • No Scholarship: No scholarship will be provided to the students until all the required documents along with the final qualifying degree certificates are submitted physically and verified.
  • Application Finality: Online application submitted by the candidates shall be considered final and binding. Requests for making corrections shall not be entertained.
  • Application Rejection: Online application found incomplete in any form will be summarily rejected. No correspondence/communication will be entertained in this regard.

The prescribed qualifications and experience are the minimum required and the mere fact that a candidate possesses the same will not entitle him/her for being called for a written/interview. Departments/Centers of the Institute reserve the right to restrict the number of candidates to be called for interview to a reasonable number, based on qualifications and/or experience.

Candidates are advised to fill their correct and active e-mail addresses in the online application as all correspondence will be made by the Institute through e-mail. Test/Interview schedule will be emailed in due course to the candidates in their registered e-mail.

Candidates shall be solely responsible for the correctness and authenticity of the information/documents provided in the online application. The Institute reserves the right to verify the antecedents or documents submitted by the candidate at any time during their period of study. In case it is found that the documents submitted are not genuine, then his/her admission shall be terminated.

After joining, Hostel and Mess facilities will be provided as per the availability and institute rules.
