Introduction to IIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2025-26
The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has announced the IIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2025-26 for the December 2025 Session. Applications are invited from eligible candidates for PhD programmes across various departments, schools, and centres. This represents a significant opportunity for aspiring researchers to pursue doctoral studies at one of India’s premier technological institutes. Candidates can apply for admission to multiple disciplines under the same login after registering once on the Application Portal, although a separate application fee must be paid for each submission. Application Process and Fee for IIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2025-26
The application for PhD programmes should be submitted only online through the Application Portal: https://www.jitg.ac.in/admission. The submission is a three-step process, and applications that are incomplete will not be considered for processing.- Step-1: Personal information including the educational qualifications.
- Step-2: Selection of programme.
- Step-3: Online payment of application fee.

Selection Process and Modes for IIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2025-26
Applications of the candidates which are complete in all respects are considered valid. The respective Department/School/Centre will process the valid applications. The Institute reserves the right to consider a limited number of eligible candidates for the selection process by setting additional shortlisting criteria based on the performance in GATE/NET/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying degree examination, and/or other educational qualifications starting from Class 10. Selections for PhD programmes shall be based on the performance of candidates in the previous educational qualifications and in the written test and/or interview conducted by the respective academic division.Modes of Selection
The selection for a particular discipline will be conducted in one of the following modes, as decided by the respective Department/School/Centre. The mode may vary across departments/schemes and will be announced along with the schedule of selections:- Offline: All stages of the selection process shall be completely offline, requiring candidates to come to the campus and participate in the selection process.
- Online: All stages shall be completely online through video conferencing (MS Teams, G-Meet, etc.). Candidates do not need to come to the campus for any stage.
- Hybrid: Some stages shall be Online, and some stages shall be Offline. At every stage, the selection process shall be conducted in the same mode (either Online or Offline) for ALL the candidates shortlisted for that stage.
Institute Assistantship Test for MTech Level Applicants (IATMLA)
There is a provision for availing Institute Assistantship for a PhD student without GATE/CEED but having the qualification of MTech/MDes/MS(R). This test is known as the Institute Assistantship Test for MTech Level Applicants (IATMLA).
IATMLA Details:
- Pre-requisite: Application for PhD programme must be under “Regular” category.
- Qualification: MTech/MDes/MS(R) who have NOT qualified GATE/CEED. This test is NOT required for those with MTech/MDes/MS(R) who have qualified GATE/CEED at some point of time. It is also NOT applicable to candidates with BTech/MSc/MA/MCA/MBA qualification, who require a valid GATE score.
- Written Test Modalities:
- Mode: Offline test conducted at IIT Guwahati campus (typically, on the same day or one/two days before the schedule of selections).
- Duration: 2 to 3 Hours (to be decided by the respective academic division).
- Qualifying Criteria: The candidates qualified in the Written Test will be considered for the selection process. The minimum qualifying criteria are:
- 40% for GEN or GEN-EWS
- 36% for OBC-NCL
- 26% for SC/ST/PwD
Results and Acceptance of Seats
The results of shortlisting and selection shall be announced on the Application Portal. Applicants can login to the portal and check the status, which includes whether the candidate is Qualified or Not, if a seat is offered or in wait-list, and the current wait-list number.
Important Acceptance and Withdrawal Guidelines:
- Acceptance: Candidates offered seats must accept the seats by making the payment of requisite fee before the last date mentioned. Otherwise, the seats will be offered to those next in the waiting list.
- Selection is Provisional: The selection is provisional, subject to production of all the relevant documents at the time of admission.
- Withdrawal: After accepting the offered seat, if a candidate wants to withdraw, he/she can express the same on the application portal latest by December 27, 2025.
- Refund: If the withdrawal request is received by December 27, 2025, a sum of Rs. 1,000/- only shall be deducted from the fee deposited. In case of late requests, only refundable portion of the fee deposited shall be returned. Applicable refund amount shall be sent from IIT Guwahati in March 2026.
- No Hard Copy Letters: IIT Guwahati will NOT send any hard copy letter to the candidates by post for notification regarding selected candidates, admission offer letter, etc.
