Candidates registered in the Ph.D. programme are referred to as research scholars, who can be categorized as Full-time or Part-time. Full-time scholars, especially those receiving fellowships, must remain on campus or at designated institutions for the duration of their stay period conditions.

Part-time scholars are full-time working professionals with at least two years of experience in teaching, research, or administration in Govt./Govt. funded institutions, or professionals from industries having an MoU with Indira Gandhi University, Meerpur. These scholars are typically exempted from the stay period if they have approved access to research facilities at their workplace.

Additionally, each faculty member in each Department/Institute offers two supernumerary Ph.D. seats to foreign students. Foreign students must apply under the Supernumerary Category.

Academic Eligibility Criteria for Indira Gandhi University (IGU) Meerpur PhD Admission 2025-26

To seek admission to the Ph.D. programme, a candidate must fulfill the following academic criteria:

  1. A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree program after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree OR a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree program after a 3-year bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent qualification.
  2. The minimum required marks in the master’s degree is 55% in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  3. Candidates seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree program should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  4. Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade are also eligible for admission.

Note on Relaxation: A relaxation of 5% marks (from 55% to 50%) or an equivalent grade is granted to candidates belonging to SC/ST/BC-A & BC-B (non-creamy layer of Haryana), differently-abled candidates, or those from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) of Haryana state.

Application Process and Fee 

Candidates must apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme exclusively through the online mode on the University website, www.igu.ac.in. It is essential to read the Information Brochure carefully before filling out the Application Form.

  • Separate application forms must be filled out for each subject.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/BC/Differently-abled from states other than Haryana will be treated as General Category candidates for all purposes.
  • A regular employee applicant must submit the application form through their employer.
  • Part-time applicants must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer, permitting part-time studies, confirming sufficient time for research, and allowing relief from duties for coursework.

Important Note: Change in Subject/Department or Category, once opted, will not be allowed. However, a written application for category correction (along with proof) may be submitted to the concerned Chairperson before the last date of form submission.

Admission Procedure and Exemptions

Admission to the Ph.D. programme is primarily filled from two categories:

  • Exempted Category Candidates: Seats shall primarily be filled from candidates with qualifications such as UGC-JRF, Joint CSIR-UGC JRF (with validity), UGC-NET, Joint CSIR-UGC NET, Teacher Fellowship holder, DST Inspire fellow, GATE, GPAT (with validity), etc..
  • Entrance Test: Vacant seats, if any, out of the exempted category, shall be filled through an Entrance Test.

NET Qualified Candidates Categories:

As per the UGC letter dated 28th March, 2024, NET candidates under the exempted category are eligible in three categories:

  1. Category-1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
  2. Category-2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
  3. Category-3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only.

Admission Through Entrance Test:

The University shall conduct an Entrance Test for subjects where UGC/CSIR-NET/JRF is not conducted (e.g., Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hotel Management, etc.) and for other departments if seats remain vacant.

  • Test Format: 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), each carrying one mark.
  • Duration: 90 minutes.
  • Qualifying Marks: Candidates must secure at least 50% marks in the Entrance Test to qualify.
  • Relaxation: A relaxation of 5% marks (from 50% to 45%) in the entrance test is granted to reserved categories of Haryana (SC/ST/BC-A & BC-B Non-Creamy Layer, Differently-abled, and EWS).

Interview Evaluation: The interview (viva voce) will test the candidate’s research acumen and includes evaluation on Domain knowledge, Research aptitude, and Research accomplishments. Candidates must appear with a concept note of 500 words about their research.

The Admission/Enrollment Fee for foreign students is $1000.

Note on Fee Concession: SC students whose parents’ annual income is not more than Rs. 2.5 lacs may not be charged fee/funds like enrolment, registration, tuition fee, etc. at the time of admission.

Refund Policy: If a candidate leaves without attending any class and applies for a refund within 7 days of admission, the fee will be refunded after deducting 10% (subject to a minimum of Rs. 1,000/-). If the seat is not filled from the waiting list within 15 days of cancellation, no refund will be provided.

  • Candidates applying for a reserved category will first be considered in the General Category based on overall merit. If not selected there, they will be considered for the reserved category.
  • SC/BC candidates selected/admitted in open competition on their own merit will not be counted against the reserved quota.
  • If a seat remains vacant in the sub-categories of BC(A) and BC(B)/SC and SC(D), and no eligible candidate is available, the seat will be filled from the other sub-category during the 3rd Counseling.
  • If reserved seats (except SC/SC(D)) remain vacant after the 3rd counseling, they may be thrown open to the Haryana General Category, and subsequently to the All India Open Category.
