NIT Silchar PhD Admission 2025-26: Important Announcement

The National Institute of Technology Silchar has released an advertisement for Ph.D. admission for the January to June 2026 session. Applications are invited for the Ph.D. programme in various departments, with specializations and admission groups detailed below. This is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring researchers to join a prestigious institute. The admission is categorized into two main groups: Group A (With Fellowship) and Group B (Without Fellowship).

Admission Groups & Categories for NIT Silchar PhD Admission 2025-26

Group A: With Fellowship

  • Category: Regular Category
  • Financial Assistance: Candidates may receive fellowship from MoE/CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency, subject to availability and guidelines.
  • Note: Scholars who prematurely end their doctoral program need to refund any scholarship received.

Group B: Without Financial Assistance

  • Financial Assistance: No financial assistance or stipend will be provided by NIT Silchar.
  • Categories under Group B (Six Categories):
    1. Regular: Full-time, self-financed students.
    2. Sponsored: Employed in a Govt./PSU/Reputed Institute/Industry, doing full-time research. Requires 2 years of work experience and a Sponsorship Letter (FORM I).
    3. Part-Time: Professionally employed personnel who must stay in/around the Institute for course work. Requires at least 1 year of experience and a No Objection Certificate (FORM II).
    4. Institute Employees: Employees of NIT Silchar, requiring a No Objection Certificate (FORM II-B) from the concerned Head of the Department and the Director.
    5. Project Staff: Candidates working on sponsored projects at the Institute, requiring a No Objection Certificate (FORM II-A) from the Principal Investigator and Dean (R & C).
    6. Sponsored (External Registration): Candidates employed in R&D/Educational Institutes with adequate research facilities. Requires Sponsorship Certificate (FORM III) from the Head of the organization.

Eligibility Criteria for Group A (With Fellowship)

All shortlisted candidates for Group A must appear in the Centralized Written test at NIT Silchar.

1. Engineering Departments (M.E./M.Tech. or B.E./B.Tech.)

  • M.E./M.Tech. or equivalent: Must have GATE/NET/Appropriate National Level Examination qualification with a minimum CPI of 6.5 (60% marks). For SC/ST/PwD, minimum CPI is 6.0 (55% marks).
  • B.E./B.Tech.: Must have an excellent academic record with a valid GATE score and a CPI of at least 8.0 (75% marks). For IITs/NITs graduates, the minimum CPI is 7.0. SC/ST/PwD candidates get a relaxation of 0.5 CPI or 55% marks.

2. Science Departments (Master’s Degree)

  • Must have a Master degree in the relevant discipline with a GATE/UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET score and an Appropriate National Level Examination (Centralized Written test at NIT Silchar).
  • Minimum CPI: 6.5 (60% marks). For SC/ST/PwD, minimum CPI is 6.0 (55% marks).

3. Department of Management Studies (Master’s Degree)

  • Must have a Master’s degree in Business Administration or Engineering/Technology or other disciplines.
  • Minimum CPI: 6.5 (60% marks). For SC/ST/PwD, minimum CPI is 6.0 (55% marks).
  • A score in NET/GATE/UGC and the Centralized Written test at NIT Silchar is mandatory for all.

4. Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) (Master’s Degree)

  • Must have a Master degree in any relevant field.
  • Minimum CPI: 6.5 (60% marks). For SC/ST/PwD, minimum CPI is 6.0 (55% marks).
  • A score in NET/GATE/UGC and the Centralized Written test at NIT Silchar is mandatory for all.

Eligibility Criteria for Group B (Without Fellowship)

All shortlisted candidates for Group B must appear in the Centralized Written test at NIT Silchar.

1. Engineering Departments (M.E./M.Tech. or equivalent)

  • Minimum CPI of 6.5 (60% marks). For SC/ST/PwD, minimum CPI is 6.0 (55% marks).

2. Science Departments (Master’s Degree)

  • Minimum CPI of 6.5 (60% marks). For SC/ST/PwD, minimum CPI is 6.0 (55% marks).

Application Procedure & Fee for NIT Silchar PhD Admission 2025-26

Online Application

  1. Apply through the online application portal available at: https://admission.nits.ac.in/.
  2. Pay the Processing Fee via online payment through the State Bank Collect (SB Collect) portal.

Processing Fee

  • Open/OBC: Rs. 1000/-
  • SC/ST/PwD/EWS: Rs. 500/-

Mandatory Submission

  • Mention the payment reference number and date in the online application form; otherwise, the application will be cancelled.
  • Upload all relevant self-attested documents in PDF format.
  • The final PDF copy of the Application form is mandatory to email to phd_admission@nits.ac.in on or before 13.11.2025.
  • The subject line for the email must be: “Application for Ph.D. program-Name of the department (applying for)-Group A/Group B”.
  • Do not send the hard copy of the Application form.

Selection Procedure for NIT Silchar PhD Admission

The selection process for the NIT Silchar PhD Admission 2025-26 will comprise the following steps:

  1. Shortlisting: Shortlisting will be done by the department based on the academic performance of the candidate (starting from Class X onwards).
  2. Centralized Written Test: All shortlisted candidates (Group-A and Group-B) are required to appear for a Centralized Written Test at NIT Silchar for the respective department. The syllabus will be as per GATE/NET/UGC.
  3. Personal Interview: This will follow the written test at the respective departments.

Important Note: Mere qualification in the written test and interview does not guarantee confirmation of selection for the Ph.D. program at NIT Silchar. Candidates who are appearing for final year M.E./M.Tech./M.Sc./M.A./MBA are also eligible to apply, but their final result must be published on or before the final admission date.
