Introduction to NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26

The NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26 for the Winter Semester 2025 is now open for applications. The facility for doing research leading to a Ph.D. degree is available in various Departments and Centres of NITC. This admission drive is a massive opportunity for prospective researchers. Before applying, candidates must carefully read and process all the details regarding eligibility, schemes, seat matrix, selection process, and important dates for the Ph.D. Programme (Part II).

Ph.D. Admission Schemes for NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26

Applications are invited under the following six principal schemes for the Ph.D. Programme (Winter Semester) 2025:

  1. Scheme 1: Full-time registration with Institute Fellowship or other Government Fellowships like CSIR-UGC JRF or KSCSTE or INSPIRE etc.
  2. Scheme 2: Full-time registration under the Self-Sponsored category.
  3. Scheme 3: Full-time registration for candidates sponsored by Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions.
  4. Scheme 4: Internal Registration for regular staff employed at NITC or Research staff employed in funded projects at NITC.
  5. Scheme 5: External (Part-time) Registration for candidates with a post graduate degree, employed in Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions.
  6. Scheme 6: External (Part-time) Registration to Direct PhD programme for candidates employed in Industry or R&D Labs or Medical Institutions, who do not have a post graduate degree but have relevant experience.

Note: If a candidate under the PwD category is not available, the PwD seats will be converted to the base category. The total seats available for the NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26 is 77 under Scheme 1.

Reservation Policy

The Government of India reservation policy for GEN-EWS or OBC-NCL or SC or ST and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories will be followed for admissions to the Ph.D. programme under Scheme 1. In the absence of PwD candidates, the seat reserved for the PwD category will be filled by a candidate of the same category (without PwD). De-reservation is not applicable for any other category.

Minimum Qualifications and Academic Eligibility for NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26

Scheme 1 (Full-time with Institute Fellowship or other Govt. Fellowships)

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

Post Graduate Degrees:

  • Qualifying Degree: M. Tech. or M. E. or M.Arch or M.Plan or M.S. or M.S. (by research) or equivalent post graduate degrees in Engineering or Technology or Architecture or Planning; or M. Sc. or M. Com. or MBA or MA or M.Ed. or MCA or equivalent post-graduate degree in Science, Commerce, Arts, Management, etc.; or Master’s degree in Medicine or Surgery or Veterinary Medicine or Agriculture or Pharmacy.
  • Minimum CGPA or Marks: 6.0 CGPA or 60% marks for General or OBC or EWS candidates; 5.5 CGPA or 55% marks for SC or ST or PWD candidates.
  • Additional Mandatory Requirements: (a) Qualified UGC-NET or (b) Secured Govt. Fellowships like DST-INSPIRE or CSIR-UGC JRF or KSCSTE or NBHM or DBT, etc. (current year tenable) or (c) Selected through a National level PhD entrance examination conducted by NIT Calicut. (Note: UGC-NET is not listed for Medicine/Surgery/Vet. Medicine/Agriculture/Pharmacy categories).

Bachelor’s Degrees (Direct PhD scheme or with VALID NET or GATE Score):

  • Qualifying Degree: B. Tech or B.E. or B. Arch or B.Des. or B. S. or equivalent degree (4-year degree program).
  • Minimum CGPA or Marks: 7.5 CGPA or 75% marks for General or OBC or EWS candidates; 7.0 CGPA or 70% marks for SC or ST or PWD candidates.
  • Additional Mandatory Requirements: Selection through a National level PhD entrance examination conducted by NIT Calicut (for Direct PhD) or Secured Govt. Fellowships or Selected through NIT Calicut’s National level PhD entrance examination (for with Valid NET or GATE).

Note: For PhD admission in Management Studies, NET or GATE Score is NOT mandatory.

Scheme 2 (Full-time Self-sponsored)

The academic requirements are the same as Scheme 1 (Post Graduate Degrees), but candidates will be selected through a National level PhD entrance examination conducted by NIT Calicut.

Scheme 3 and Scheme 4 (Sponsored or Internal)

The academic requirements are the same as Scheme 1 (Post Graduate Degrees), and candidates will be selected through a written test and or interview conducted by the concerned Department or Centre. Scheme 3 candidates must be a regular employee with at least two years of continuous service and must provide a Sponsorship Certificate.

Scheme 5 [External (part-time) after PG]

  • Academic Requirements: Same as Scheme 1 (Post Graduate Degrees).
  • Minimum CGPA or Marks: 5.0 CGPA or 50% marks for all categories.
  • Additional Requirements: Minimum two years’ experience and selection through a written test and or interview. Must submit a No Objection-cum-Experience certificate.

Scheme 6 [External (part-time) after UG) – Direct PhD]

This scheme facilitates the NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26 for working professionals without a PG degree. Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Requirements: 4-year B.E. or B.Tech. or B.S. or B.Plan. or B.Des Degree or 5-year B. Arch. or MBBS or BDS degree, or equivalent.
  • Minimum CGPA or Marks: 5.0 CGPA or 50% marks for all categories.
  • Additional Requirements: Minimum two years’ experience in Industry or R&D Labs or Medical Institutions and selection through a written test and or interview. Applicants with patents or research publications are desirable. (Candidates from Engineering or Science colleges or similar institutions are NOT eligible).

Selection Process for Admission to NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26

  1. Scheme 1 (Institute Fellowship) and Scheme 2 (Self-sponsored): Selection is based on qualifying the National level PhD entrance examination & Interview conducted by NIT Calicut. When Institute Fellowships are exhausted, remaining candidates will be considered for Scheme 2, if they indicated preference.
  2. Candidates with Govt. Fellowships (CSIR-UGC JRF, etc.): Selection is based on performance in the written test and or interview conducted by the respective Department or Centre.
  3. Schemes 3-6: Selection is based on the performance in the written test and or interview conducted by the respective Department or Centre.

How to Apply for NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2025-26

  1. The Online application link is research.nitc.ac.in/login. This link will be active from 11th October 2025 (01:00 PM).
  2. Register using your e-mail id to create a login.
  3. Prepare soft copies of all required documents (certificates, mark lists, photograph, signature, Aadhaar, publications, category certificates, NET or GATE score proof, Sponsorship or No Objection-cum-Experience Certificates).
  4. Pay the application fee. A single application fee allows application to a maximum of two departments. Separate application and fee are required for a third department.
  5. OBC-NCL and OPEN-EWS candidates applying for Scheme 1 must upload a recent certificate issued on or after 1st April 2025.
