PGIMER Chandigarh PhD Admission 2026-27: Eligibility Criteria

A candidate must fulfill the following qualifications as on the last date of submission of the online application form:

1. For Medical Sciences:

  • MBBS/MDS/Master of Physio-therapy with minimum 55% aggregate marks.
  • OR MD/MS in the subject concerned or Diplomate of National Board of Examination.
  • The degree must be obtained from a Medical College recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI)/NMC.

2. For Non-Medical/Life Sciences/Social Behavioral Sciences:

  • M.Sc/MA/Masters in Engineering or its equivalent/examination with at least 60% marks.
  • The qualification must be from a college/institute/university recognized by the UGC.
  • Ineligibility Note: Candidates possessing Master’s Degrees through distance learning courses shall not be eligible.

PGIMER Chandigarh PhD Admission 2026-27: Procedure for Applying

Candidates are required to apply online on the official PGI website (www.pgimer.edu.in). The application process is meticulous and must be followed carefully. Applicants are advised to read the prospectus thoroughly before beginning the online form.
  1. Fill the application form online, ensuring no column is left blank. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
  2. A list of faculty members willing to take Ph.D. students and the available seats is displayed on the PGI website.
  3. Candidates must choose only one department and only one faculty member as their potential guide.
  4. Take a printout of the duly filled online form.
  5. It is mandatory for all applicants to submit the signed and stamped Annexure-6 (Recommendations from the concerned faculty member) along with the printout of the form and certificates.
  6. Candidates who qualify the entrance exam (CBT) must submit all required documents within three days after the result declaration.
  7. Candidates having their own fellowship must submit the documents at least 15 days before the counseling.

PGIMER Chandigarh PhD Admission 2026-27: Categories of Candidates Eligible for Registration

The following are the categories eligible to apply for the Ph.D. program:
  • Own Fellowship: Candidates with their own fellowship/stipends from various funding agencies are exempted from the entrance exam.
  • NET/GATE Qualified with Project: Candidates who qualified CSIR-UGC NET-LS/UGC Net (Social Medicine & Community Health OR Forensic Science)/GATE (with >=95 percentile) and have joined an extramural research project under a PGI faculty member are also exempted from the entrance test.
  • PGI Fellowship: Limited fellowships awarded strictly on merit basis.
  • Research Scheme Employees: Candidates supported by the PGI faculty member’s extramural project fund, with the faculty ensuring financial support for the entire 3-5 year program.
  • In-service candidates and Deputed/Sponsored candidates.

PGIMER Chandigarh PhD Admission 2026-27: Method of Selection & Minimum Qualifying Marks

The selection is primarily based on performance in the entrance examination (CBT), followed by counseling. The entrance test is compulsory for all candidates, except for those with their own external fellowship or PGI medical faculty members.

Merit List Tie-Breaking: Inter-se-merit is resolved by first checking the number of attempts in the qualifying M.Sc/MBBS/MD/MS examination, then higher aggregate marks, and finally, the candidate senior in age ranks senior.

PGIMER Chandigarh PhD Admission 2026-27: PGIMER Fellowship

A limited number of PGIMER Fellowships are available and will be awarded strictly on merit to selected candidates.
  • Monthly Stipend: Rs. 31,000/- P.M. (fixed).
  • Additional Grant: One-time thesis grant of Rs. 5,000/- is admissible.
  • Number of Fellowships: Limited to 6-7 only for each session.
  • The final admission is subject to the availability of the PGI fellowship or sufficient research funds/grants.

PGIMER Chandigarh PhD Admission 2026-27: Fees and Dues, and Agreement Bond

Selected candidates in the counseling process are required to pay the necessary fees and dues on the same day as the counseling. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of selection, and the seat will be offered to the next candidate on the waiting list.

Important Notes: Agreement Bond/Sureties/Contract

The prospectus mentions a mandatory section on Agreement Bond/Sureties/Contract. Selected candidates must join the course on the date stipulated in the letter of selection, failing which the selection/admission shall stand cancelled/withdrawn. Candidates selected for the course are required to submit their original Permanent Registration Certificate and Migration Certificate at the time of joining. Say No to Ragging. Ragging is Crime.
