Patna University (PUP) PhD Admission 2025-2026: Introduction

Patna University (PUP) has officially released the admission notification for its PhD Programme (Course Work) for the academic session 2025-2026. Online applications are invited from eligible candidates who have qualified the Patna University Ph.D. Admission Test (PAT) or hold a valid NET/JRF qualification. The university offers doctoral programs across a wide range of 28 subjects, including Sciences, Arts, Commerce, and Languages.

The entire admission process is governed by the “Common Ordinance and Regulations for the award of Ph.D degree” as approved by the Governor’s Secretariat, Bihar. Admissions will be strictly based on the availability of vacant seats in each department and in accordance with the State Government’s reservation policy. Candidates must ensure they meet the specified eligibility criteria before applying.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria for PUP PhD

Candidates must have qualified in either the Patna University Ph.D. Admission Test (PAT) or the National Eligibility Test (NET) / Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to be eligible to apply for the Patna University (PUP) PhD Admission 2025-2026.

The final merit list will be prepared based on a 100-point system as per the university ordinance. The weightage distribution is as follows:

Application & Admission Process

  1. Online Application: Eligible candidates must submit the online application form and pay the fee of Rs. 300/- by January 21, 2026.
  2. Hard Copy Submission: A printout of the filled form along with self-attested copies of all academic documents must be submitted to the concerned department by hand or speed post.
  3. Interview & Merit List: The respective department will conduct interviews within a week after the application deadline. A merit list will be prepared based on the prescribed weightage system and reservation policy.
  4. Provisional Admission & Fee Payment: Selected candidates will receive a provisional admission letter and must immediately pay the course work fee of Rs. 2000/- online.
  5. Course Work: The PhD course work will commence on February 21, 2026, at the Faculty level. It will include two papers: Paper-I (Faculty level) and Paper-II (Department level).

Important Instructions & Notes

  • The State Government’s reservation policy will be strictly followed during seat allocation.
  • Each department will maintain a waiting list of at least 2-3 candidates per category.
  • The final selection list will be displayed on the department’s notice board and uploaded to the Patna University website.
  • Admission is solely subject to the availability of vacant seats in the chosen subject.
  • All amendments and regulations as notified by the Governor’s Secretariat up to 18.12.2018 will be applicable.
