The PhD programme focuses on experimental research using ion beams and accelerators. The core areas are:
- Geo‑chronology – accelerator mass spectrometry applications

Candidates must satisfy all the following conditions (as per advertisement):
- Educational qualification: Master’s degree (5‑year integrated after +2) in Physics / Applied Physics.
- Minimum marks: 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade in Master’s.
- Bachelor’s level: Must have studied Physics and Mathematics in graduation.
- National eligibility test: Must have qualified CSIR‑UGC NET‑JRF (June 2024 onwards) in Physical Sciences or an equivalent national‑level test (JEST, etc.).
- Relaxation: As per UGC norms for reserved categories.

Shortlisting is based on the following stages:
- Screening of applications based on NET‑JRF score and academic records.
- Shortlisted candidates will be called for a Written Test / Interview at IUAC, New Delhi.
- Date and time will be communicated individually to shortlisted applicants.
- Final selection depends on performance in the interview/written test.
Selected candidates must join within one week of result announcement.
- Registration: Selected students will be registered for PhD with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
- Coursework: Two semesters of coursework as per UGC norms are mandatory after joining.
- Hostel: Accommodation will be provided to all selected students.
- Fellowship: As per JRF norms (through NET‑JRF or equivalent).
