Admission to Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) PhD Admission 2026-27 is based on a written entrance examination conducted on 2nd May 2026 across India. Candidates shortlisted based on the entrance examination will be invited for an interview in Chennai. The final selection is based on performance in the entrance test and interview.

• PhD Mathematics: Candidates with NBHM PhD Fellowship can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance exam.

Progress of research scholars is monitored periodically by a doctoral committee.

Chennai Mathematical Institute also offers a part time PhD programme allowing candidates to complete a PhD while continuing work in their parent organization. Admission is through the same written entrance examination and interview process as regular PhD programmes. Applicants must hold a Masters degree and must complete a minimum residency requirement of one semester.
