• Regular PhD (with assistantship): Candidates need a valid GATE / NET / CEED score (as applicable). For BTech/MSc/MA/MCA/MBA qualification, valid GATE/NET/CEED is mandatory.
• MTech/MDes/MS(R) holders without GATE/CEED: May apply under Regular category and appear for IATMLA (Institute Assistantship Test for MTech Level Applicants) conducted at IIT Guwahati campus.
• Minimum qualifying marks: General / GEN-EWS : 40% in IATMLA; OBC-NCL: 36%; SC/ST/PwD: 26% (for written test qualifying). Relaxation as per Govt. norms.

• MEC (Minimum Eligibility Criteria): Candidates failing to meet basic norms are not processed.
• Institute Assistantship Test for MTech Level Applicants (IATMLA): Exclusive for PhD (Regular) applicants with MTech/MDes/MS(R) qualification but without GATE/CEED.
