Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), Visakhapatnam, was established in 2016 under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG). The Institute was declared an Institution of National Importance through the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy Act, 2017.
IIPE focuses on advanced research in emerging energy sectors including shale gas, coal bed methane, gas hydrates, renewable energy, conventional energy resources, storage technologies, and downstream oil & gas activities. The institute maintains strong collaborations with industries and international institutions for research, consultancy, faculty exchange, student exchange, internships, and joint research initiatives.
The Institute provides facilities for research leading to the award of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The award is based on:
- Successful completion of prescribed coursework, comprehensive examination and seminar.
- Publication of original research work in reputed journals/conferences or patents/technology transfer.
- Submission of thesis and successful final viva voce examination.

The Institute Research Fellowship is available for eligible candidates under the Regular category.

- Written / Computer-Based Test
- Interview
- Or a combination of Test and Interview
