Introduction
Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) PhD Admission 2025-26 aims to develop future-ready professionals to address the challenges of translational research for societal problems. The Ph.D. program is interdisciplinary, with a close interface between various disciplines of biological sciences. GBU provides Rs. 20,000/- P.M. to Ph.D. students for 5 years for sustenance under the GBU Fellowship category.

Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must have completed M.Sc./MTech in Biotechnology/any discipline of biological sciences or qualifications declared equivalent to the Master’s degree in Biotechnology/any discipline of biological sciences by corresponding statutory/regulatory bodies.
- Candidates must have at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed or equivalent qualification.
- A relaxation of 5% marks (from 55% to 50%) or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the UGC Ph.D. Degree Regulations (2022).
- Candidates will have to produce a certificate and self-declaration statement for reservation weightage.

Category of Admission & Fellowship
The University admits Ph.D. students under the following categories for
GBU Fellowship (Rs. 20,000 per/month): Students selected under this category will receive a fellowship from GBU.National Fellowship: Candidates with JRF qualified (CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR/DST) or applicants having their National fellowship from recognized Government funding agencies such as CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICAR/DST or equivalent. GBU will not be responsible for the fellowship of such candidates.Project Fellowship: This category refers to the students working in a sponsored project (in GBU/GBRC). The said project fellows are eligible to be admitted to the Ph.D. Program (of GBU/GBRC) to work on a full-time basis. GBU will not be responsible for the fellowship of such candidates.
Procedure for Admission/Selection Process
The selection process for
- An entrance test will be conducted at GBU. The Ph.D. entrance exam qualified candidates will be called for the interview. The qualified candidates will be selected as Ph.D. students of GBU.
Exemption from Entrance Test (National Fellowship): Candidates with their National fellowship (JRF) conferred by the government agencies, e.g., UGC/CSIR/ICAR/ICMR/DBT/DST, will be exempted from the GBU entrance test and may directly appear for the interview. The fellowship terms and conditions of the funding agencies will be followed at GBU. However, GBU will not be responsible for the maintenance of the fellowship of such candidates after their fellowship fundings are over.Exemption from Entrance Test (GBU Project Fellows): GBU Project fellows having qualifications of national eligibility test-without fellowship (UGC/CSIR/ICAR/ICMR/DBT/DST) will be exempted from the GBU entrance test and may directly appear for the interview after the recommendation of the PI. However, GBU will not be responsible for the maintenance of the fellowship of such candidates after their project fundings are over. The GBU Project fellows working in the national/state extramural research projects may apply for the entrance exam.
Fee Structure for PhD Programme
The student admitted to the GBU PhD program will have to pay the following fees (Any revision in fee by the competent authority as per the university policies will be applicable):
