IIIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2026 (August): Eligibility Criteria
Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)
- Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
- MSc (CS)/MSc (IT)/MCA/Equivalent Non-Tech Master’s Degrees in the relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks having a GATE/NET/SLET score in CS/IT.
- Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.
Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)
- Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
- MSc (Electronics) and equivalents with GATE/NET/SLET scores in the relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
- Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.
Humanities and Social Science (HSS)
- Master’s degree in Economics/English/Linguistics/Political Science/History/Other relevant areas with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
- Candidates with NET-JRF will be given preference.
Science and Mathematics (S&M)
- MA/MSc/M.Tech in Mathematics/Statistics with at least 60% marks or a CPI of 6.5.
Reservation and Eligibility Relaxation
For SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy layer) and PD categories, the notification states that eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants. Reservation is as per GOI rules.
OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose the certificate and self-declaration statement as per the formats at Annexure-I and Annexure-II. The OBC (NCL) Certificate issued by the competent authority as per the Government of India rules shall only be acceptable.

Regular/Full Time
A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she may get a fellowship/assistantship or may be self-financed.
Sponsored (Full-Time)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A sponsorship letter must be attached with the application.
Part-Time
A student in this category is a professionally employed person who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed must be enclosed at the time of application.
Schedule and Programme
- Shortlisting for the interview will be held based on applications received.
- The last date of receiving application is stated in the notification as 23/28/2026 (Sunday).
- The tentative date of written test/interview for selection is 08/09/2026 (Tuesday).
- Shortlisting will be done based on the availability of seats and academic performance of the candidates. A candidate merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria may not be shortlisted.
- There will be no support for travel for the interview.
- There is no application fee.
- Course requirements, if any, will be prescribed by individual Departments. Students will be encouraged to take courses. The Doctoral Committee of a student will evaluate the preparedness of a student and prescribe one or more courses that will have to be taken.
- There will be a written/oral or both comprehensive examination after admission to determine if the student is ready to take up research work and to determine if the student has sufficient breadth of knowledge in the discipline in which he/she has been admitted.
