Minimum Qualification Requirements for IIT BHU Varanasi PhD Admission 2025-26

Full Time Regular Registration Category Minimum Qualification

The minimum eligibility criteria are based on the discipline and the highest qualifying degree, with specific provisions for candidates with professional experience.

  • Master’s Degree: M.Tech./M.E. in the discipline concerned or allied area with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4-Year): B.Tech./B.E. in the discipline concerned or allied area with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
  • Bachelors with Experience: B.Tech./B.E. with more than two years of professional experience requires a minimum of 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (provided the degree is from a Central Government funded Institution).
  • M.Sc. as Allied Discipline: If M.Sc. is the qualifying degree (where science is an allied discipline), criteria are: a minimum of 65% marks or 6.5 CPI at the Master’s level, AND a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI at the Bachelor’s level.
Ph.D. in Pharmacy
  • Master’s Degree: M.Pharm. or in an allied discipline/area with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4-Year): B.Pharm. with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
  • Bachelors with Experience: B.Pharm. with more than two years of professional experience requires a minimum of 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (provided the degree is from a Central Government funded Institution).
Ph.D. in Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences)
  • Master’s Degree: M.Sc. in the discipline concerned or allied area with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4-Year): B.S./B.Sc. in the discipline concerned or allied area with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
  • Bachelors with Experience: 4-Year Bachelor’s degree with more than two years of professional experience requires a minimum of 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (provided the degree is from a Central Government funded Institution).
Ph.D. in Humanistic Studies
  • Master’s Degree (Arts/Science): Master’s degree in relevant/allied subjects with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4-Year Engg/Science): B.Tech./B.E./B.S. (4-Year program) with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
  • Bachelors with Experience: 4-Year Bachelor’s degree with more than two years of professional experience requires a minimum of 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (provided the degree is from a Central Government funded Institution).
Ph.D. in Architecture, Planning and Design
  • Master’s Degree: M.Arch./M.Plan./M.Des. or allied discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4-Year): B.Arch./B.Plan./B.Des. with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
Interdisciplinary Programmes
  • Ph.D. in Systems Engg./Software Innovation/Bio-chemical/Bio-medical/Materials Science: Requires M.Tech./M.E./M.Sc. or equivalent in the concerned/allied discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI OR a 4-year B.Tech./B.E. or equivalent with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
  • Ph.D. in Industrial Management: Requires B.E./B.Tech. and M.E./M.Tech./M.B.A. (or equivalent management degree) with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI OR B.E./B.Tech. with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.
  • Note on B.Tech. with Experience: For all interdisciplinary programs, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree with more than two years of professional experience requires a minimum of 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (provided the degree is from a Central Government funded Institution).

Admission of Candidates having National-level Scholarships

There is a provision for admission to Ph.D. programmes for candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for the respective programmes and also have qualified in any of the national level JRF/SRF tests conducted by UGC, CSIR, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Council of Medical Research or DST-INSPIRE fellowship or Dr. K.S. Krishnan Fellowship of DAE, etc.

  • Applicants must have the requisite qualification with minimum marks/CPI as specified for the Full Time Regular category.
  • Such candidates may be offered admission after an interview as and when they apply in Departments/Schools where they are eligible.
  • They will be recommended by DPGC to register for the programme at the next available semester. Such candidates who are applying for admission in response to this advertisement for the current session will go through a similar process of selection as other applicants.

Financial Assistance and Fellowship

Financial assistance is available primarily for students admitted under the Full Time Regular registration category and those with external scholarships. The details are as follows:

  • Amount: ₹37,000/- per month (subject to change as per MHRD norms).
  • Duration: Up to 5 years (subject to satisfactory progress).
  • Work Requirement: Must discharge duties (Teaching Assistantship) up to eight hours per week.
  • Continuation: Contingent upon good academic standing and the satisfactory performance of assigned duties.
JRF/SRF (External Fellowships)Candidates possessing a valid UGC-CSIR JRF/SRF, DST-INSPIRE, or other such national-level fellowships.
  • Amount: As specified by the sponsoring agency (higher than Institute Assistantship).
  • Registration Category: Typically admitted under the National-level Scholarships category.
  • Benefit: They are admitted outside of the Institute Assistantship quota.

Categories of Admission for IIT BHU Varanasi PhD Admission 2025-26

A candidate may apply for any of the following registration categories, provided they fulfill the respective eligibility requirements:

  1. Full Time Regular Registration Category
  2. Full Time External Registration category (Requires Form IV)
  3. Full Time Sponsored Registration Category (Requires undertaking/sponsorship letter)
  4. Part-time Internal Category
  5. Institute Project Category
  6. Part-time External Category
  7. Part-time Executive Category
  8. Candidates having National-level Scholarships (e.g., UGC/CSIR JRF/SRF, DST-INSPIRE, etc.)

Selection Criteria

Admission to the Ph.D. Programme will generally be based on a written test/interview or a combination of both for candidates shortlisted by the concerned Department/School.

Categories Exempted from the Written Test

The following categories of applicants are exempted from appearing in the written test and will be selected primarily through an interview:

  • External Registration Category and Sponsored Registration Category.
  • Part-time Registration (Internal/External/Executive) and Institute Project Category.
  • Candidates having National Level Scholarships (e.g., UGC/CSIR JRF/SRF, DST-INSPIRE, etc.).
  • Outstanding Candidates from Premier Institutions (IITs, etc.) with a CPI of 8.00 or above (on a 10.0 point scale), who are directly considered for the Teaching Assistantship seats after an interview.

A 5% relaxation in qualifying marks will be given to SC/ST candidates, who will be considered only for the reserved category seats.

⚠ Critical Information and Document Checklist

Provisional Admission: Candidates with pending qualifying examination results may be considered, but proof of passing with minimum marks/grades is MANDATORY before the date of registration, otherwise admission will be cancelled.

OBC/EWS Certificate: The OBC (non-creamy layer) & Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificate must not be dated prior to six months from 1st July, 2025.

Required Forms: Forms IV (External Registration), V (Sponsored Registration), VII (Undertaking letter for admitted candidates), and VIII (Format for letter of reference – two sealed copies required) are necessary based on your category and admission status. Download all necessary formats below:
