Category 1 – Institute Ph.D. Scholar
Receives Institute Research Assistantship sanctioned by the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Special Eligibility for Students of CFTIs
- CFTI students pursuing B.Tech/B.E./Integrated M.Tech/Integrated M.Sc/any other 4-year program.
- Must have completed 7 semesters or more with minimum CGPA $\ge 8.0$ (and must obtain CGPA $\ge 8.0$ at graduation).
- Candidates with M.Sc. degree from IITs / IISc with CGPA $\ge 8.0$ are also eligible.
- Exemption: These candidates need not be GATE/CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualified to appear for the selection process.
- Eligibility for Assistantship is same as Category 1.
Category 2 – Sponsored Ph.D. Scholar
This category includes four types of sponsored candidates:
- Sponsored by External Organization:
- Must be in continuous service for at least three (3) years in a recognized organization (Gol Depts, R&D organizations, recognized universities/colleges, etc.).
- Must meet all other academic qualifications of Category 1.
- Need not be GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualified.
- Ph.D. scholars under this category shall not receive any financial support from the Institute. Must submit a Sponsorship Certificate (Annexure A).
- Sponsored GoI Doctoral Fellowship (CSIR-UGC, DST-INSPIRE, DBT, ICMR, etc.):
- Candidates must have CSIR-UGC NET (JRF) or any other GoI doctoral fellowship.
- Must meet the minimum academic qualification of Category 1.
- Need not be GATE qualified.
- Financial support received from respective GoI doctoral fellowships.
- Sponsored Research Project under IIT Bhubaneswar:
- Must be currently working in a sponsored project of the Institute as JRF/SRF/equivalent.
- Must meet minimum Category 1 qualifications.
- The remaining period of the project fund and the project tenure must be at least 2 years (relaxable up to 6 months) from the date of enrollment.
- Sponsored under Artificial Intelligence and High Performance Computing Research Centre (AHRC):
- Interdisciplinary program with specific, varied eligibility requirements (check official URL).
- Fellowship will be the same as Category 1.
Category 3 – Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. Students of IIT Bhubaneswar
This program is applicable only for Autumn Semesters admission. Bright and motivated M.Sc. students at IIT Bhubaneswar who have completed their third semester and secure a CGPA $\ge 8.5$ are automatically shortlisted.
Category 4 – Institute Staff Category (IIT Bhubaneswar)
- Applicable to members of Non-Teaching Staff (permanent capacity).

- Need not be GATE/UGC-NET/CSIR-NET (LC) qualified.
- Must obtain No Objection Certificate (NOC) (Annexure C) from the Competent Authority.

- Must fulfill the prescribed academic norms of Category 1.
- Need not be GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualified.
- The residential period for course work is relaxed.
- Not entitled for any assistantship. Must produce NOC (Annexure D).

II. General Instructions for IIT Bhubaneswar PhD Admission 2025-26
- An interested candidate must apply for the Ph.D. programme through ONLINE process only by the closing date. The application must be supported by uploading scanned copies of all ORIGINAL educational and experience certificates. No hardcopy of the Online Application Form is to be sent.
- The shortlisting of application will be purely based on the information submitted in the online application. Candidates are advised to fill the online application with utmost care.
- The minimum eligibility criteria do not guarantee either shortlisting or selection for admission. Applications not meeting minimum eligibility criteria will be rejected without any intimation.
- Relaxation up to 5% marks in all academic examinations is permitted only for SC/ST/PwD candidate categories.
- Scholars admitted under the Institute Staff category, Sponsored by external organization, and Working Professionals category are not entitled for any assistantship.
- Shortlisting Criteria: The candidate must fulfil the minimum eligibility criterion as specified in Section I. School(s) may fix additional criteria in terms of marks/score, or discipline/branch of the candidate.
- Selection Procedure: All shortlisted Ph.D. applicants will have to appear for a selection process which includes Interview and a Written Test (optional, as per school’s requirement).
- Written Test & Interview: Selection based on 40% weightage in a written test and 60% weightage in an interview.
- Only Interview: Selection based on 100% of the marks secured in the Interview.
- The candidates selected against Categories 2, 4, and 5 must produce the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their present employers using the prescribed format (Annexures A, C, or D). Without the NOC, the candidate’s selection is liable to be cancelled.
