The Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IITDH) invites applications from highly motivated and talented candidates for its Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program.IIT Dharwad admits Ph.D. candidates as full-time students with research scholarship or Teaching Assistantship (TA) or Project Assistantship (PA). B. Application Categories & Financial Support for IIT Dharwad PhD Admission 2025-26
IIT Dharwad admits Ph.D. candidates under various categories, though not every department may have openings in all modes of support.
B.1. Teaching Assistantship (TA)
This category is funded by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The assistantship is payable for a maximum duration of 5 years or up to the date of thesis defense, whichever is earlier.
- Stipend (Present Rate): ₹37,000/- per month for the first 2 years, and an enhanced rate of ₹42,000/- per month for the remaining 3 years, plus HRA as per norms. (Subject to MoE revision).
- Work Requirement: Students must assist in teaching, research, and/or administrative work for 8 hours of work per week.
- Eligibility Note: Employees on the rolls of any organization are not eligible and must submit a relieving letter before joining.
B.2. Fellowship Awardee (FA)
Financial support is provided by various Government/Semi-Government schemes (e.g., CSIR, UGC, DAE, DST, DBT).
- Mandatory Requirement: A valid Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) award letter from agencies like CSIR/UGC/DST INSPIRE/DAE/DBT/NBHM is required.
- Amount: Amount, duration, and HRA are as specified by the awarding agency.
B.2.2. PMRF: A Brief Note on Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship
The Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme is designed to improve the quality of research in higher educational institutions with attractive fellowships.
B.2.3. Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Fellowship
This scheme offers a fellowship of ₹38,750 monthly in 1st & 2nd year and ₹43,750 per month in 3rd, 4th, and 5th years. It also provides an annual Research Contingency Grant of ₹1,20,000/- per year.
B.3. Project Assistantship (PA)
The PA category is a full-time Ph.D. program funded from sponsored research projects (industry/government funding agencies). Stipend is paid as per the governing project rules.
B.4. Externally Sponsored Ph.D. (EX)
For candidates who are employed in recognized R&D organizations/labs and have at least two years of work experience in the relevant area. Persons working in colleges/universities are not eligible under this category.
- Requirement: Must submit a Sponsorship Certificate (Appendix A) from their organization.
- Coursework: The candidate must be fully relieved from their normal duties for 1-2 semesters (or possibly an additional semester) to complete the coursework requirement at IIT Dharwad.
B.5. Institute Staff (IS) for Ph.D.
This category is for existing regular/permanent employees of IIT Dharwad, subject to fulfillment of conditions mentioned in the Ph.D. Rule Book.
B.6. College Teacher (CT) Ph.D.
Applicable for teachers from AICTE/UGC approved colleges in the vicinity of IIT Dharwad who have a minimum of 2 years of work experience.
- Requirement: Must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the parent institute, giving an undertaking that they will be released from normal duties for coursework.
- Coursework: Must be relieved from normal duties for the coursework requirement, which is likely a period of 1-2 semesters.
B.7. Sponsored Candidates (SF) Ph.D.
SF candidates are full-time Ph.D. students whose entire expenses are met by their parent organization/funding agency. They are not eligible for any financial support from IIT Dharwad.
- Requirement: Must submit an NOC and a Relieving Certificate from the employer confirming full-time enrollment as a student at the Institute.
B.8. Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) Ph.D.
For full-time regular/permanent faculty members of AICTE approved Degree/Diploma Level institutes.
- Requirement: Must have 3 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in the appropriate branch.
- Application: Candidates must apply through the AICTE QIP portal.
C. General Guidelines for Applying Online
Please read all instructions carefully before filling the application form. The application link will be updated on the official website. This process applies to the IIT Dharwad PhD Admission 2025-26 session.
- Register/Sign up to obtain your User ID/Username, ensuring the phone number and email ID are valid until the admission process is completed.
- Login and fill out the form step by step. Keep all required documents ready in soft copy (PDF/JPEG).
- Pay the non-refundable application fee via the IIT Dh e-pay facility:
- Gen/Gen (EWS)/OBC/all other candidates: ₹200/-
- Women/SC/ST/PwD category candidates: ₹100/-
- Note down the e-pay transaction No. and fill the remaining details in the CIMS application.
- An applicant needs to pay the application fee only once irrespective of the number of departments they are applying to, but separate applications must be submitted for each department.
- For ‘EX’ category applicants, a Sponsorship Letter and CV of the co-supervisor (merged as a single PDF) is required.
- Verify all details before clicking ‘Submit.’ Applications once submitted cannot be modified and are liable to be rejected for incomplete/false information.
- Important Certificate Note: Candidates selected under OBC-NCL and EWS categories must produce the relevant certificate issued after 01 April 2025 at the time of admission. The certificate must be in the format applicable to Central Government institutions.
- SC/ST/PwD candidates who attend interviews in person at IIT Dharwad are eligible for Travel Fare reimbursement (AC-III Tier in train).
