Categories of PhD Admission at Institute of Infrastructure Technology Research and Management (IITRAM)
The Ph.D. program is offered under two main schemes, with further sub-categories:
1. Regular Ph.D. Programme
- Sponsored Candidate: For persons in service with the minimum prescribed qualifications. Note that NO financial assistance is provided by the Institute under this category.
- Self Financial Candidate: No financial assistance is provided. However, a Teaching Assistantship of Rs. 12,000 PM may be provided, subject to fund availability and departmental requirements.
- Fellowship Awardee:
- Regular With Institute Assistantship: Eligible candidates may receive Institute Assistantship* of Rs. 25,000 + HRA (if hostel is not provided), subject to approval, fund availability, and departmental requirements.
- Individual Fellowship Category: Candidates with external fellowships (like CSIR/UGC/DST/DBT/ICMR etc.). These candidates are NOT entitled to Institute Research Assistantship.
- Research Assistantship through project: Research fellows appointed in sanctioned projects from Government agencies can apply.
2. Part-time Ph.D. Programme
- University or Institutes or College Teacher
- Institute Staff at IITRAM (IS)
- External working in an organization or industry with R&D facility.
Detailed Eligibility Criteria
Candidate must possess the following qualifications in appropriate subject areas. For a detailed interpretation of First Class, 60%, 55%, and 50% criteria, refer to the notes below.
- Engineering / Technology: Master’s degree in a relevant subject of Engineering / Technology with First Class* (55%** marks for SC/ST) AND a Bachelor’s degree in relevant subjects of Engineering / Technology with First Class* (55%** marks for SC/ST). OR B.Tech. with high CPI.
- Basic Sciences: Master’s degree in relevant subjects of Science / Engineering with First class* (55%** marks for SC/ST) AND Bachelor’s degree in relevant subjects of Science / Engineering with First class* (55%** marks for SC/ST).
- Humanities and Social Sciences: M.A. or equivalent degree in Humanities and Social Sciences subjects with 55% marks for the general category (50%*** for SC/ST). OR Master’s degree in Commerce with 55% marks for the general category (50%*** for SC/ST). OR M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Science, with First Class or 60% marks (55%** marks for SC/ST). OR Candidate with two years of PGDM from recognized institutions will be considered for the research areas consistent with their academic background.
Important Notes on Criteria:
- *First Class: Fulfil one of these—A degree explicitly mentioning first class; OR Minimum of 60% marks in the final year; OR Minimum of 60% aggregate of all years; OR A CPI of 6 (out of 10).
- **55% / ***50% Marks: Fulfil one of these—Minimum of 55% / 50% in the final year; OR Minimum of 55% / 50% aggregate of all years; OR A CPI of 5.5 (out of 10) / 5 (out of 10).
Application and Selection Procedure for Institute of Infrastructure Technology Research and Management (IITRAM) PhD
- Step I: Fill up the Application Form Online: The application form is available on the Institute website – www.iitram.ac.in. Submit the duly filled application as per the schedule. Incomplete applications will be rejected. Note: There is no application fee.
- Step II: Selection Process:
- Eligible candidates will be called for a written test and interview.
- The syllabus for the written test consists of 50% research methodology and 50% subject specific content. The test will be conducted at IITRAM.
- Cutoff marks in the written test for the interview are 50% for Open category and 40% for SC/ST Candidates.
- Candidates with individual fellowships like UGC-NET (including JRF) or GATE may be exempted from the written test based on the Department Committee’s recommendation.
- Shortlisted candidates for the Interview are required to give a brief presentation on a topic of their research interest.
- No TA/DA will be given to candidates attending the written test.
- Step III: Physical Verification of Documents: Documents will be verified on the day of the interview.

Fee Structure and Payment

- Students not staying in the Hostel and not availing the mess facility are exempted from the payment of Hostel and mess related fees.
- The fees must be paid through NEFT or RTGS.
- The fee is subject to revision from time to time.
- No request for a fees refund shall be entertained.
Condition Precedent: The policy and procedure are subject to modification. In case of any dispute, the decision of the Competent Authority of the Institute shall be final and binding, and subject to Ahmedabad jurisdiction only.
