| Admission Route | Eligibility / Applicable Area | Selection Weightage |

Candidates who have completed an M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade may be eligible, subject to the applicable provisions and programme-specific requirements.
Important NET/JRF/GATE Requirement
Possessing the educational qualification alone is not sufficient. Candidates must also possess the prescribed relevant/allied UGC/CSIR-NET percentile, JRF qualification or GATE score, as applicable to the concerned Ph.D. programme.
The prospectus specifies that UGC/CSIR-NET percentile from June 2025 onwards will be considered for the 2026-27 Ph.D. admission cycle. Previous NET percentiles/scores are not considered.
| NET Category | Description |
|---|---|
| Category 1 | JRF qualified candidates |
| Category 2 | Candidates qualified for Assistant Professorship without JRF |
| Category 3 | Candidates eligible for Ph.D. admission but neither JRF nor Assistant Professorship qualified |
Admission through the UGC/CSIR-NET route is based on the NET percentile instead of a separate JNU entrance examination. The NET percentile carries 70% weightage and the viva-voce carries 30% weightage.
Candidates must have the NET qualification/percentile in the relevant or allied subject prescribed against the particular Ph.D. programme.
Candidates who have qualified for a valid Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) may apply under the separate JRF category, subject to the educational qualification and relevant subject requirements of the concerned Ph.D. programme.
JNU accepts eligible JRF qualifications from UGC/CSIR and also recognises relevant JRF qualifications of agencies such as ICMR, DBT and NBHM as prescribed in the e-Prospectus.
- JRF candidates must apply separately under the JRF category.
- JRF candidates are required to appear for viva-voce.
- The JRF category has 100% weightage for viva-voce.
- The JRF certificate must remain valid at the time of physical verification.
Candidates holding only Lectureship/Assistant Professorship without JRF are not treated as JRF candidates for the JRF admission category.
Candidates having a valid GATE score can apply for eligible Ph.D. programmes of the School of Engineering.
The School of Engineering offers Ph.D. programmes in:
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
For admission through GATE, the GATE score carries 70% weightage and the viva-voce carries 30% weightage.
The GATE score must be valid on the last date of submission of the online Ph.D. application.
- Eligibility Screening: Applications are checked against the prescribed educational qualification and relevant NET/JRF/GATE requirements.
- Shortlisting: Eligible candidates are shortlisted according to the applicable admission criteria and seat matrix.
- Viva-Voce: Shortlisted candidates are required to appear for viva-voce.
- Merit Preparation: For NET and GATE routes, the applicable score/percentile and viva-voce marks are combined according to the prescribed weightage.
- Merit Lists: JNU publishes merit lists according to the admission schedule.
- Seat Blocking & Pre-enrolment: Selected candidates must complete the prescribed online process and payment within the stipulated period.
- Physical Verification: Selected candidates must appear in person with original documents.
Candidates who do not appear for the viva-voce, where viva-voce is prescribed, will not be considered for admission.
JNU's 2026-27 e-Prospectus lists Ph.D. programmes across multiple Schools, Centres and Special Centres. The programme-specific eligibility criteria and relevant NET/JRF subjects must be checked before applying.
