Eligibility Conditions for Research (Ph.D.)

Candidates are eligible for the Ph.D. program if they have completed any of the following with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade on a point scale, where a grading system is followed:

  1. A 1-year/2-semester Master’s degree program after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree program.
  2. A 2-year/4-semester Master’s degree program after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree program.
  3. Qualifications declared equivalent to a Master’s degree by the relevant statutory body.
  4. An M.Phil. course passed with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade.

Note on 4-Year Bachelor’s Degree: Candidates seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree program must have a minimum of 75% marks or an equivalent grade.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be granted to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/Differently-abled/EWS, and other categories as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.

Research Entrance Test (RET) and Exemption

Admission to the Ph.D. program is divided into two stages: the Research Entrance Test (RET) and the Interview/Viva-Voce.

Research Entrance Test (RET) Structure (First Stage)

The written examination will be based on multiple-choice objective questions, consisting of two papers. The syllabus will be equivalent to that of the National Eligibility Test (NET) issued by the UGC.

Qualifying Criteria: General category candidates must score 40% marks in each paper, but the total qualifying mark is 50% of the aggregate score. SC/ST/Disabled/OBC (NCL)/EWS candidates get a 5% relaxation on the total score. There is no negative marking in the entrance exam.

Exemption from Research Entrance Test (RET)

The following candidates are exempted from the RET for the **Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith PhD Admission 2024-25**, but they must appear for the interview:

  1. Regular teachers of the University or its affiliated colleges who have successfully completed their probation period.
  2. Foreign candidates (including NRIs).
  3. Candidates selected for fellowship by UGC/CSIR etc. (JRF/NET under Category-2 & Category-3) and equivalent, GATE or equivalent examinations.
  4. Candidates who have secured at least 75% marks in the GATE examination.
  5. Officers who have served as Colonel or equivalent in the Navy, Army, or Air Force for at least 15 years, applying for Ph.D. (Security and Strategic Studies).
  6. Candidates whose certificate validity is up to the date of the research admission notification.

Important Exemption Note: Candidates who have passed SLET/SET from other states are mandatory to take the Research Entrance Test.

Second Stage: Interview/Viva-Voce

Candidates who qualify the entrance exam or are exempted from the RET must appear for the Second Stage: Interview/Viva-Voce.

The selection will be based on the marks obtained in the interview/viva-voce (PowerPoint Presentation), which will be for **30 marks**.

  1. Successful candidates from the RET and exempted candidates must fill out a separate application form for the second stage, submitting a fee of ₹500/- (Unreserved and OBC) or ₹250/- (SC/ST and Disabled candidates).
  2. They must submit all academic certificates, reservation certificates, a copy of the research proposal, and a CD/Pen Drive for the PowerPoint presentation to the concerned department by the stipulated date.
  3. A descending merit list will be prepared based on the interview marks, and admission will be completed in that order.

Important Instructions Regarding Course Work

All admitted research scholars, including those exempted from the entrance exam, are mandatorily required to complete a **6-month Course Work** (after taking leave from the working institution).

The 6-month Course Work will be considered preparation for the Ph.D. which will include Research Methodology, Quantitative Methods, Computer Applications, and review of published books related to the field of research.

The Course Work examination will be conducted by the University under the guidance of the Head of the Department/Faculty Head.

Attendance and Passing:

  • Minimum 75% attendance in all classes (written and practical) of every paper is mandatory to appear in the Course Work examination.
  • A minimum of 55% marks in each paper and in the aggregate (total marks) is mandatory for all students to pass the Course Work examination, including internal assessment.
  • A maximum of 10% attendance shortage may be granted by the Vice-Chancellor upon recommendation, but a minimum of 65% attendance is mandatory even after the concession.
  • A student who fails the Course Work will be given one additional opportunity to pass with the next batch.
  • Students who do not register the minimum attendance will not be given a second chance.

Reservation Policy for Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith PhD Admission 2024-25

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/EWS will be applicable as per the latest policy of the State Government at the time of admission.

Key Reservation Points:

  1. Reservation benefits are only available to candidates who are original residents of Uttar Pradesh.
  2. The caste certificate for female candidates must be issued in the name of their father; a certificate mentioning the husband’s name will not be valid.
  3. For OBC candidates, the caste certificate issued before October 01, 2022, will not be valid.
  4. EWS candidates must present an EWS certificate issued by the competent authority for the financial year 2025-26 at the time of admission.

  • The admit card can be downloaded from the university website (www.mgkvp.ac.in or https://mgkvpphdadmission.samarth.edu.in/) three days before the examination.
  • Before filling the online application form, candidates must carefully read and follow all instructions, as they will be responsible for any errors.
  • The fee submitted by the candidate for admission will not be refunded under any circumstances.
  • At the time of admission, the candidate must submit the Migration Certificate and an affidavit in the format prescribed by the university.
  • At the time of counseling, the original mark sheet and original certificate of the qualifying examination must be presented.
