National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) PhD Admission 2026: Programme Details & Eligibility

NUSRL Ranchi offers full-time and part-time PhD programmes in Law and Interdisciplinary studies. The duration for full-time programme is 3 years and for part-time is 4 years. Below are the minimum qualifications and mandatory requirements:

National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) PhD Admission 2026: Admission Criteria

In view of the UGC public notice dated March 27, 2024, admission to the PhD programme is based on the UGC-NET examination scores. The following categories of candidates are eligible:

  1. Category 1: Candidates qualified for the award of JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor.
  2. Category 2: Candidates qualified for appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to PhD.
  3. Category 3: Qualified for admission to PhD only.

Admission process:

  • JRF-qualified (Category 1) candidates are admitted based on an interview as per UGC Regulations 2022.
  • For Categories 2 and 3, 70% weightage is given to NET test scores and 30% weightage to the interview.

Final admission is based on combined merit of NET marks and viva voce/interview marks.

Interdisciplinary PhD Areas

The interdisciplinary PhD shall be in Law and the following disciplines:

Candidates qualified for appearing in the viva must submit a preliminary synopsis of 8-10 pages of the proposed research work along with the application form. Failure to appear in the viva will result in disqualification.

Steps:

  1. Download the Application Form from the university website.
  2. Prepare a soft copy of the application form along with the synopsis and send to phd.admission@nusrlranchi.ac.in on or before 15/02/2026.
  3. Submit a hard copy with required enclosures to ‘The Registrar, At Nagri, P.O. Bukru, Ranchi Patratu Road, Kanke, Ranchi – 834006’ on or before 23/02/2026.
  4. The application envelope should bear the superscription “Application for Admission to the Doctoral Programme”.
Course Work & Post-Admission Steps

After enrollment, candidates must undergo course work. A written examination is conducted at the end of the course work. Only those who successfully complete the course work are eligible to submit the final synopsis.

The final synopsis shall be defended before a panel. If rejected, it must be re-submitted as per suggestions. After successful defense, a suitable guide will be allocated by the University.

Full-time PhD students are required to be present in the University during the programme and undertake teaching & research activities assigned by the authorities.

Part-time PhD candidates must submit a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) from their employer stating: (a) permission to pursue part-time studies, (b) official duties allow sufficient time for research, and (c) if required, relief from duty to complete course work.

Details of the fee for the entire programme are available on the University website. However, the University reserves the right to change the fee structure before completion of the admission process.
