Eligibility Criteria for NIT Agartala PhD Admission 2025-26

The minimum qualifications vary based on the department:

A. Engineering Departments

  1. Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology with a minimum CGPA of 6.5/10 or equivalent 60% marks.
  2. Direct admission for B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm graduates from Institutes of National Importance or those with an average NIRF ranking within 100 (over the last 3 years) with 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA and a valid GATE score card tenable for the admission year.
  3. Master’s Degree in a relevant science discipline with a minimum CGPA of 6.5/10 or equivalent 60% marks. GATE score is mandatory for availing MoE scholarship.

B. Science Departments (Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics)

  1. Master’s degree in Sciences with a minimum of 65% marks (6.5 CGPA) OR 60% marks (6.0 CGPA) with a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR-NET/NBHM qualification tenable for the year of admission.
  2. Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a minimum CGPA of 6.5/10 or equivalent 60% marks. Preference is given to GATE qualified candidates.
  3. Direct admission for B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm graduates as specified in A (II).

C. Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS)

  1. Master’s degree in relevant discipline (English, Economics, Commerce, etc.) with a minimum of 60% marks (6.5 CGPA) OR 55% marks (6.0 CGPA) with a valid UGC/CSIR-NET/NBHM qualification tenable for the year of admission. Preference is given to NET qualified candidates.

D. Management

  1. MBA/P.G. Diploma in Management (2-year duration) with 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5/10. Preference is given to GATE/NET qualified candidates.

Important Relaxation Note

For SC/ST/Physically Challenged or differently abled candidates, a relaxation of 0.5 CGPA (in a 10 point scale) or 5% is allowed in the minimum qualifying marks.

Categories of Scholars and Fellowship

Candidates for NIT Agartala PhD Admission 2025-26 can apply under the following categories:

Full-time Scholars (Engineering, Science, MHSS)

  • Full-time with scholarship (GATE/NET/NBHM): Eligible for fellowship as per MoE/Institute norms. GATE/NET/NBHM qualification is mandatory for receiving the scholarship. For Management candidates with an MBA degree, the eligibility condition for the scholarship is 70% marks.
  • Full-time with scholarship (Non-GATE/Non-NET): Eligible for a maximum of 50% of the MoE scholarship (for Engineering), or Rs. 13,000/- per month (for Science and MHSS). Scholars must work as a Teaching Assistant (TA).
  • Full-time self-financed scholars: Not entitled to any scholarship from the Institute. May be allowed for full MoE scholarship if they qualify GATE within one year of admission.

Other Categories

  • Part-time/Institute Employees/Research Scholars under External Registration: GATE/CSIR/UGC JRF/NET/etc. are generally not required. Scholars in these categories, including Full-time Sponsored candidates, are not eligible for any financial assistance from the Institute. Sponsorship/No-Objection Certificate in the prescribed format is mandatory.
  • Foreign Scholars: Must register as regular full-time scholars. Must possess a valid GRE/GMAT/GATE/JMET/CAT/XAT/MAT/ATMA/UGC or CSIR/NET and a TOEFL/IELTS score. They are not eligible for any financial assistance from the Institute.

Selection Procedure for NIT Agartala PhD Admission 2025-26

The selection process for the NIT Agartala PhD Admission 2025-26 involves a written test and an interview:

  1. Candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria (Sections A to D) will be provisionally short-listed by the respective departments.
  2. Short-listed candidates will be required to appear for an online written test (30 marks) comprising MCQ-type questions covering the UG and PG levels (specialization-wise at PG level).
  3. Candidates qualifying the test will be allowed to appear for an online interview.
  4. GATE/NET qualified candidates may be exempted from the written test.
  5. Provisional selection will be made strictly based on academic performance, publication, and availability of seats.

Application Instructions and Fees

The application process for the NIT Agartala PhD Admission 2025-26 is strictly online:

Application Process

  1. All applicants must apply online through the admission portal: https://admission.nita.ac.in/. (Use Mozilla Firefox browser).
  2. Candidates can apply in multiple departments, but separate registration and application fee is required for each department.
  3. The Application ID and Password will be sent to the applicant’s email ID after registration.
  4. Incomplete applications or applications without the requisite, clearly visible documents will be rejected.

Application Fees (Non-refundable)

  • Rs. 500/- for OP/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates.
  • Rs. 300/- for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
  • Fees must be paid online only.

Mandatory Documents to be Uploaded (Scanned Original)

  • Proof of date of birth, Photo ID proof, and Mark sheets of Class $10^{th}$, $12^{th}$, Bachelor’s, and Master’s Degree.
  • GATE/NET etc. score card (if applicable). Fellowship will not be considered if the required score card is not uploaded.
  • Recent colour photograph (strictly formal, preferably white/sky blue background).
  • SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL/EWS certificate (if applicable). OBC-NCL/EWS must be issued on or after 01/04/2025.
  • For Part-time/Sponsored candidates: Sponsorship certificate/No Objection Certificate in the prescribed format.

General Terms and Conditions

  • The Institute reserves the right to cancel the candidature without assigning any reason.
  • The prescribed qualifications are minimum; mere possession of the same does not guarantee a call for the written test and/or interview.
  • Conversion of CGPA to percentage and vice-versa is not allowed.
  • Candidates must produce all original documents during verification.
  • Admission category change is not allowed once the final submission of the online application is complete.
  • For hostel-related matters, candidates must contact the Office of the Chief Warden.
