Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission
The minimum eligibility criteria vary depending on the department and the category of registration for the NIT Delhi PhD Admission 2025-26 Spring Semester.
Engineering Departments (Sr. No. 1 to 5) – Full-Time under Institute Assistantship

Applied Sciences Departments (Sr. No. 6 to 11) – Full-Time under Institute Assistantship
- Master’s Degree in the appropriate branch with a First Class or minimum 60% Marks (or CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale).
- Candidates with a master’s degree in the relevant branch must have qualified GATE/NET for the scholarship.
PhD Registration Categories
Candidates can apply for the following categories under the NIT Delhi PhD Admission 2025-26 Spring Semester:
- Full-Time under Institute Assistantship: Eligible for scholarship (subject to availability). Requires GATE/NET or Institute Written Exam.

Selection Procedure
The selection process for the NIT Delhi PhD Admission 2025-26 Spring Semester involves a written examination (screening test) followed by a presentation and interview.
- Candidates with valid GATE/NET (JRF/LS)/UGC/GPAT/Inspire Fellow or sponsorship are generally exempt from the Institute’s written examination.
- For all other candidates applying for Institute Assistantship, the Institute written examination must be cleared.
- The written test is MCQ-based with no negative marking. The cutoff is 40% (24 marks out of 60) for General/OBC/EWS and 35% (21 marks out of 60) for SC/ST/PwD candidates to be eligible for the subsequent stages.
- Short-listing for admission is based on the performance in the presentation (in the proposed research area) and the interview conducted by the respective Department Admission Committee, and the availability of a Supervisor.
- Marks from the screening test are not counted for the final merit list.
Teaching Assistantship-cum-Scholarships
Full-Time PhD students are eligible for a scholarship cum teaching assistantship as per the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India guidelines, subject to availability. Candidates must have qualified for GATE/NET or the Institute Entrance Exam to be eligible for this. Candidates selected without an assistantship must submit an undertaking that they will not claim a scholarship from the Institute in the future.
