Introduction: NIT Hamirpur PhD Admission 2025-26 Notification

The National Institute of Technology Hamirpur (NIT Hamirpur) has released the official notification for the NIT Hamirpur PhD Admission 2025-26 (January 2026 session). This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring researchers to join an Institute of National Importance established in 1986. NIT Hamirpur offers Ph.D. programmes across various disciplines in Engineering, Architecture, Sciences, Management Studies, and Humanities & Social Sciences. Categories of Ph.D. Programmes

NIT Hamirpur admits Ph.D. candidates under the following categories, catering to both full-time scholars and working professionals:

A. Full-Time Research Scholars

  • Fellowship Research Scholars (FT01): Eligible for financial assistance (fellowship) as per MoE guidelines. Must have qualified a National Level Test (UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE). Sponsored/employed candidates are ineligible.
  • Non-Fellowship Research Scholars (FT01-A): Pursuing Ph.D. in self-finance mode without institute financial assistance. Must appear for the Institute/Department level written exam, unless exempted by qualifying GATE/NET.
  • Externally Funded Research Scholars (FT02): Receiving fellowship from external agencies (UGC, CSIR, DST, etc.). Must have qualified a National Level Test (UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE).
  • Sponsored Research Scholars (FT03): Sponsored by Government/Semi-Government Organizations/Institutions/Industry, generally requiring at least 2 years of service and a mandatory NOC/Study Leave.

B. Part-Time Research Scholars

  • Institute Research Scholars (PT01): Regular employees of NIT Hamirpur or those working on sponsored projects within the Institute.
  • Sponsored Research Scholars (PT02): Working professionals sponsored by their respective organizations, who pursue the Ph.D. while serving their parent organization. A one-year residency requirement applies, which may be exempted for applicants within 500 kms radius.

Educational Qualifications for Admission to Ph.D. Programmes

Admission to the Ph.D. Programme is subject to meeting specific educational qualifications, which vary by department. The minimum requirements are outlined below:

Ph.D. in Engineering (Civil, Mech, Elect, CSE, ECE)

  • Master’s Degree: M.E./M.Tech. in the appropriate discipline with a minimum CGPI of 6.5/10 (60% marks) for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL, and 6.0/10 (55% marks) for SC/ST/PwD candidates. OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree: B.E./B.Tech. in the appropriate discipline with a minimum CGPI of 8.5/10 (80% marks) for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL, and 8.0/10 (75% marks) for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

Ph.D. in Engineering (Chemical/Materials Science & Engineering)

The same criteria as Ph.D. in Engineering above apply, with additional consideration for Master’s Degree in Science (M.Sc.) candidates:

  • Master’s Degree in Science (M.Sc.): Minimum CGPI of 7.5/10 (70% marks) for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL, and 7.0/10 (65% marks) for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

Ph.D. in Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Maths)

Candidates must have passed a Master’s Degree in the respective Science discipline or equivalent. Specific CGPI/percentage requirements apply, generally 7.5/10 (70%) for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL and 7.0/10 (65%) for SC/ST/PwD.

Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS)

  • Master’s Degree: M.A./M.Sc. in Humanities/Social Sciences (English/Economics/Sociology/Psychology/ Behavioural and Social Sciences) with minimum CGPI of 6.5/10 (60% marks) for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL.

Ph.D. in Architecture

  • Must have passed both Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture/Planning and Master’s Degree in Architecture/Planning or equivalent. Minimum CGPI of 6.5/10 (60% marks) in Master’s degree for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL. OR
  • Direct admission with Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture/Planning with minimum CGPI of 8.5/10 (80% marks) for Open/EWS/OBC-NCL.

B. Additional Requirements for Sponsored Candidates (FT03 & PT02)

Sponsored candidates must fulfill the basic eligibility criteria and provide a No Objection Certificate / Sponsorship Certificate in the prescribed format (Annexure-III) on the organization’s letterhead. The sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large-scale organization/industry or an AICTE recognized technical institution, and the candidate must have been in regular service for at least two years.

Application Processing Fee

The application processing fee is non-refundable and must be paid online via SBI Collect (refer to Annexure-II in the brochure for detailed instructions).

Instructions to Complete the Application

Applicants are required to submit their applications online only. No other mode of submission will be accepted.

STEP I – Payment of Application Fee

  1. The fee must be paid via the online payment gateway (SBI Collect).
  2. Save a soft copy of the SBI Collect fee receipt.
  3. Merge the fee receipt with all supporting documents into a single combined PDF file.

STEP II – Complete Online Application and Acknowledgment

  1. Before starting, prepare digital copies of your Passport-size Photograph (450×450 pixels, min 100 KB), Signature (350×150 pixels, min 50 KB), and the single combined Supporting Documents PDF.
  2. Fill out the application form carefully. Once submitted, the application cannot be altered or resubmitted.
  3. Submit only one application per department. Duplicate applications will be rejected.

Upload Requirements

The single combined PDF file of supporting documents must contain the following in order:

  1. Photo ID Proof (Aadhaar / PAN / Voter ID / Driving Licence)
  2. GATE/NET Certificate or Equivalent
  3. Other required academic and experience documents.

Important Notes & Guidelines

Shortlisting and Communication:

  • Shortlisted candidates for the Written Test and/or Interview/Presentation will be notified only through the Institute’s official website (www.nith.ac.in).
  • No individual emails will be sent.

Documents for Physical Reporting and Registration:

  • The final list of required documents for physical reporting will include original certificates, mark sheets, category certificates, and a medical certificate.
  • An Undertaking by the Student and Affidavit by Parent/Guardian for anti-ragging compliance (available on http://www.antiragging.in/) is mandatory.

Legal Jurisdiction:

  • Any disputes will be subject to the legal jurisdiction of courts at Hamirpur/Shimla only.
