👋 Introduction: NIT Patna PhD Admission 2026-27 (Even Semester)
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna has released its Ph.D. Admission Notification for the Even Semester (Jan-June 2026, Academic Session 2025-26). Applications are invited for the Ph.D. Programme through an Institute Admission Test and/or Interview. Additionally, candidates are also being considered for JRF/SRF positions for externally funded projects currently running at NIT Patna. NIT Patna PhD Admission 2026-27 is an excellent opportunity for aspiring researchers to join a prestigious institution. Note that the last date for submission of the online application is 30th December 2025 (upto 5:00 PM). ✅ Eligibility Criteria for NIT Patna PhD Admission
Candidates must meet one of the following minimum qualifications to be eligible for NIT Patna PhD Admission 2026-27:- M.Tech./ M.E./ M.Arch/ M.Planning/M.Design or equivalent degree with at least 6.5 CGPA (in the scale of 10) or 60 percent marks in aggregate from a recognized technical institute or university.
- B.Tech/BE/B.Arch/MCA* (for CSE branch only)/ M.Sc./ M.Com./ MBA/MA or equivalent degree with First class (60% marks or 6.5 CGPA) with a valid GATE/UGC-NET/CSIR-NET score.
Note on Relaxation and Exemptions:
- The minimum CGPA/marks percentage is relaxed by 0.5 CGPA or 5 percent in case of candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PwD categories.
- Sponsored candidates are exempted from the GATE/NET examination.
- All candidates (except sponsored ones) are required to produce a proof of having qualified GATE/UGC-NET/CSIR-NET score card at the time of submission of the application form.
📚 PhD Admission Categories
The Ph.D. programme applicants are classified into the following categories:Full Time
- With Stipend/Scholarship – Funded by NIT Patna: Candidates eligible for Institute Research Fellowship/Assistantship as per MoE, GOI norms. They must refund the stipend if they leave the programme without completion.
- Full time Sponsored Candidate: Regular employees of PSU, Government departments, R&D organizations, Industries of repute, Educational Institutions Faculty, and sponsored defence personnel. They are exempted from GATE/NET and may be exempted from the Screening Test. They must submit an NOC from their employer.
- Candidates with Direct Financial Support: From Govt./Semi Govt. agencies (e.g., CSIR, UGC, DST, DAE, etc.) are treated as sponsored full-time research scholars.
Part Time: without Assistantship
- Sponsored Employee: Regular/permanent employees of PSU, Government department, R&D organization, Industry of repute, Educational Institutions Faculty, employees under MoU, etc.. They are exempted from GATE/NET but must appear in the Selection Interview and submit an NOC.
- Non-PhD Faculty of NIT Patna: Regular or Appointed on Consolidated salary of NIT Patna, provided they fulfill the minimum eligibility.
JRFs/SRFs working in externally funded projects
These candidates are eligible if the project has at least one year tenure left on the date of registration. They must submit an No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Principal Investigator (PI). 📝 Admission Procedure and Selection Process
Admission to the Ph.D. Programme is based on the minimum eligibility criteria and selection after evaluation in a Screening Test and/or Selection Interview conducted by the respective Admission Committee.Screening Test Details
- The Screening Test consists of 100 Marks.
- Syllabus is as per the GATE/NET Exam of the respective discipline.
- Qualifying Marks: 40% of the full marks for General, EWS, and OBC candidates, and 35% of the full marks for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
Selection Interview
- The Interview consists of 100 Marks.
- Candidates based on the Screening Test will be shortlisted for the interview.
- Direct Interview: Candidates other than Full Time Institute Fellowship category (e.g., those with direct financial support, Sponsored, Part Time, JRF/SRF working at NIT Patna, Non-Ph.D. Faculty) will be called directly for the Selection Interview.
- The interview will assess the candidate’s depth of knowledge in the domain/research subjects and aptitude for research.
- Cut-off Marks: The minimum cut-off for admission is 50% of the full marks for the Selection Interview.
💰 Fee Structure and Financial Assistance
Fee Structure
The First Semester fee at the time of Admission (excluding Hostel & Mess Fee) is Rs. 59,750/-.Financial Assistance
- Institute Research Fellowship/Assistantship will be available to eligible students as per MoE, GOI norms.
- Selected candidates are required to execute an undertaking/agreement bond mentioning they will refund the stipend/scholarship/assistantship if they leave the programme without completion.
- Scholarships from any other external agency are governed by the rules and regulations of that funding agency.
💻 Application Procedure for NIT Patna PhD Admission 2026-27
- All candidates must apply only through online mode on the NIT Patna website: http://www.nitp.ac.in.
- The last date for submission of the online application along with the payment of the online application fees is 30th December 2025 (upto 5:00 PM).
- Application Fee (non-refundable):
- Rs. 1500/- for General/ OBC/ EWS.
- Rs. 750/- for SC/ST/PwD.
- The application form will not be considered without payment of the applicable fee.
- After submission, applicants must download the printed application for future reference, as no separate Admit Card or call letter will be sent for the Admission Test or Interview.

- High School Certificate and Mark sheets of all qualifying examinations.
- GATE/NET score card (if applicable).
- Caste Certificate – {For OBC (NCL)/EWS issued on or after 1st April 2025}.
- Character Certificate issued by the Head of the Institution last attended/ from the employer.
- Certificate of sponsorship and No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the parent employer (if applicable).
- Downloaded Application form along with proof of online payment.
- Migration Certificate (required at the time of admission).
