The eligibility requirements vary according to the department and specialization. The official notification specifies different qualifying degree, marks/CGPA and GATE/NET/JEST requirements for different disciplines.
Chemical Engineering
- Relevant M.E./M.Tech with minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% for General/OBC/EWS and 6.0 CGPA or 55% for SC/ST at Master's level, or equivalent qualification.
- B.E./B.Tech with a valid GATE score above the prescribed cut-off or UGC/CSIR-NET in the relevant specialization, with the prescribed Bachelor's level CGPA/marks.
- M.Sc. with minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA, along with valid GATE or UGC/CSIR-NET in the relevant specialization.
Engineering Departments
- Relevant M.E./M.Tech with the prescribed minimum CGPA/marks.
- B.E./B.Tech with a valid GATE score above the prescribed cut-off or NET in the relevant specialization, wherever specified.
- The general Bachelor's requirement mentioned for several engineering departments is 8.0 CGPA or 75% for General/OBC/EWS and 7.5 CGPA or 70% for SC/ST candidates.
Chemistry & Mathematics
A Master's degree in the relevant field of Science with valid NET or GATE qualification in the relevant specialization and minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% for General/OBC/EWS candidates and 6.0 CGPA or 55% for SC/ST candidates.
Humanities, Social Sciences & Management
A Master's degree in Management or Commerce with NET in Management or Commerce. Candidates must have minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% for General/OBC/EWS and 6.0 CGPA or 55% for SC/ST at Master's level.

For OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS candidates, the notification states that the certificate must have been issued on or after 01 April 2026.
Candidates whose final-year result is yet to be declared are not eligible according to the notification.
- All sponsored candidates are exempted from NET/GATE/JEST.
- Internal sponsored candidates are exempted from appearing in the written test and from the deputation order requirement by the Institute.

- Sponsored part-time candidates under admission category S.No. 5 are exempted from producing proof of two years of regular service at the time of enrolment.
