Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D. Admission

Application Process for NERIST PhD Programmes

The application for North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) PhD Admission 2026-27 must be completed exclusively in the ONLINE mode. Candidates are advised to prepare all necessary documents and information before starting the application process.

Selection Procedure

Admission to the Ph.D. programme at NERIST is based on an Entrance Test and Interview. Key details are:
  • Candidates qualified in GATE/NET in the relevant discipline are exempted from the Written Test but must compulsorily appear for the interview.
  • The selection will be based on the total marks with a weightage of 70% for the written test and 30% for the performance in the interview.
  • The Written Test will have a single paper with 100 multiple-choice questions (1 mark each), divided into two sections:
    • Section-A (50 marks): Research Methodology.
    • Section-B (50 marks): Subjects of the respective Department/Centre (Syllabus of National Level Tests like GATE/NET).
  • The cut-off to qualify the written test is 50% of the total marks (50% relaxation, i.e., 45% for SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/PwD/EWS categories).
  • The interview assesses the candidate’s competence for the proposed research work, feasibility of the research area, and the potential for contribution to new knowledge.

Additional Fee Notes

  • A Mess Advance of ₹16,610/- per semester is required to be paid separately for hostel mess (for full-time students).
  • A Late fee of ₹1500/- shall be charged for late registration.
  • An additional late fee of ₹100 per day shall be levied if the student fails to report to the institute on the opening day.
  • ₹240/- for Group Insurance shall be charged once a year during the July-December semester.

  • The Institute provides fellowships to all full-time Ph.D. scholars.
