Introduction to RGIPT PhD Admission

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) PhD Admission 2025-26 for the Even Semester of the Academic Session 2025-2026 is open. RGIPT, Jais, an autonomous institution established by the Government of India and accorded the status of “An Institution of National Importance,” invites duly filled-in on-line applications for its Ph.D. Programmes. The institute has centers at RGIPT Bengaluru Campus and RGIPT Sivasagar Campus.

RGIPT is a domain-specific institute focused on providing world-class education, training, and research to produce efficient human resources to meet the growing requirements of the petroleum and energy sector. The P.G. programmes aim at developing manpower with a strong theoretical and experimental background in frontier areas of research. Candidates whose qualifying examination results are not yet declared may also be considered, but their admission will be provisional upon producing proof of completion before the date of registration or within 8 weeks from the date of registration.

Minimum Qualification and Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. in Engineering

  • Master’s in Engineering: Minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale).
  • Bachelor’s in Engineering: Minimum 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0-point scale).
  • Master’s in Science (Allied Discipline): Minimum 65% marks or 6.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale).

Ph.D. in Sciences

  • Master’s in Science: Minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale).
  • Four-year Bachelor’s in Science: Minimum 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0-point scale).

Ph.D. in Humanities

  • Master’s in Engineering: Minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale).
  • Master’s in Humanities/Sciences or Allied Subjects: Minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale).
  • Bachelor’s in Engineering or Sciences (4-Year program): Minimum 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale).

Ph.D. in Management Studies

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Management or Allied Discipline: Minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CPI.
  • Professional qualification (CA, ICWA & CS): Minimum 50% marks in professional qualification and 60% in bachelor’s degree.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Allied Discipline: Minimum 75% marks or 7.5 CPI.

A relaxation of maximum 5% in qualifying marks or 0.5 in CPI may be considered for professionals with at least 2-years of industry experience.

Or Master’s Degree in Science in the following Disciplines: Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Materials Science, or equivalent.

Management Studies
  • Master’s degree in Management/Engineering/Technology or equivalent.
  • Or Master’s degree in Science/Commerce/Arts or equivalent.
  • Or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology.
  • Or Professional qualification- CA, ICWA & CS in addition to a bachelor’s degree.
Mathematical Sciences

Or Master’s Degree in Science in the following Disciplines: Geophysics/Geology/Petroleum Geosciences, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent.

Energy and Human Science

Master’s Degree in Science/Technology in the following Disciplines: Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Polymer Sciences, Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Life Sciences, Physics, Applied/Engineering Physics, Electronics, or equivalent

Or Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology in the following Disciplines: Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent

Or Master’s Degree in Arts in Social Sciences and Humanities.

Registration Categories for PhD Programme

A candidate may apply for admission under any of the following four categories:

  • Full Time Regular Registration Category
  • Full Time External Registration Category
  • Full Time Sponsored Registration Category
  • Part-Time Registration Category

Full Time External Registration Category

  • For candidates working in an external R&D organization or industry recognized by the Institute.
  • Must be sponsored by employer and in employment with the organization for at least two years at the time of admission.
  • Employer must undertake to pay full salary and relieve candidate for on-campus course work (this relief is not required if the organization is within 50 km from the Institute).

Full Time Sponsored Registration Category

  • For candidates sponsored by a Teaching Institution, R&D organization, or Industry.
  • Must be in service of the sponsoring organization for at least two years.
  • Sponsoring organization must undertake to provide full salary and relieve the candidate to pursue the programme for its full duration.
  • Candidate must complete programme requirements by staying on-campus for the full duration.

Part-Time Registration Category

  • Available for permanent staff/faculty of the Institute or Research Assistants/JRFs/SRFs working in an externally funded project at the Institute.
  • Also for professionally employed persons from a sponsoring institution/organization located within 50 KM from the Institute, provided they are a regular employee for at least two years.

Financial Assistance and Fellowships

Financial Assistance in the form of Institute Assistantship is available for students in the Full Time Regular Registration Category who have qualified the GATE Examination. B. Tech students of RGIPT/IITs are exempted from the GATE requirement for Institute Assistantship.

Monthly Fellowship

  • Junior Research Fellow (JRF): Rs. 37000/-.
  • Senior Research Fellow (SRF): Rs. 42000/-.

NET-LS qualified students with a CPI of 7.0 or 70% marks may be eligible for Institute Assistantship in the Department of Energy and Human Science and Department of Management Studies. Students availing the assistantship will be assigned duties up to eight hours per week.

Oil PSU Ph.D. Research Fellowships (25% Supplementary Stipend)

Students from the Full Time Regular Registration category may be selected for these prestigious fellowships, which offer a 25% supplementary stipend in addition to the regular stipend (as per UGC guideline) and other monetary benefits (HRA, contingency, medical facilities).

  • ICRGI Ph.D. Research Fellowship: Two students under joint supervision of RGIPT and IOCL.
  • HPRGI Ph.D. Research Fellowship: Two students under joint supervision of RGIPT and Hindustan Petroleum.
  • CPRGI Ph.D. Research Fellowship: Two students under joint supervision of RGIPT and Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (CPCL).
  • BPRGI Ph.D. Research Fellowship: Three students under joint supervision of RGIPT and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL).

The upper age limit for the Full Time Regular Registration category is 28 years as on admission into fellowship, with age relaxation applicable as per Govt. of India policy.

Selection Criteria

Admission will be based on a written test and an interview for candidates shortlisted by the department.

Exemption from Written Test

The following categories of applicants are exempted from the written test:

  • External Registration Category.
  • Sponsored Registration Category.
  • Part-Time Registration Category.
  • Candidates having National Level Scholarships (UGC/CSIR JRF/SRF, DST-INSPIRE, etc.).
  • Outstanding candidates from Premier Institutions (CFI/CFTI) with CPI of 8.00 or above (on a 10.0 point scale).

Reservation Policy

Reservation is provided as per the Government of India policy:

  • SC: 15% seats.
  • ST: 7.5% seats.
  • OBC (non-creamy layer): 27% seats.
  • EWS: 10% seats.
  • Physically Challenged (PC): 5% reservation (horizontal).

A relaxation of 5% marks or 0.5 CPI is admissible on the qualifying degree marks for SC and ST candidates in the admission process.

Mess Advance: In addition to the above, all students must pay a mess advance per semester at the beginning of each semester:

  • Rs. 25,000: Jais Campus and Bengaluru Campus.
  • Rs. 16,000: Sivasagar Campus.

This advance will be adjusted towards actual bills at the end of each academic year. Any such stay for less than a semester would be charged @100/- for each day of stay at the Institute’s Hostel.
