Department-wise Research Areas and Eligibility Criteria for S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS)

Candidates must satisfy both the Basic Qualification (minimum aggregate score of 60% or 55% for reserved categories) and possess one of the valid national-level Further Qualifications specific to their chosen department:

1. Department of Astrophysics & High Energy Physics (AHEP)

  • Basic Qualification Subjects: Masters in Science or Technology in Physics and Applied Mathematics / BTech in Engineering Physics or allied subjects.
  • Focused Research Areas:
    • Star formation and Pre-main Sequence stars
    • Spectroscopic studies of Novae, Wolf-Rayet, and Planetary Nebulae
    • Low-mass stars, Brown dwarfs, and Exoplanets
  • Further Qualifications (Any One): JEST 2025 (Upto AIR 400), or CSIR-NET-JRF / UGC-NET-JRF / NBHM 2025 doctoral scholarship with award letter valid up to January 2026.

2. Department of Chemical & Biological Sciences (CBS)

  • Basic Qualification Subjects: Masters in Science or Technology in Chemistry (with specialization in Physical Chemistry), Physics, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Applied Optics and/or Photonics, Applied Physics, Electronics / BTech in Engineering Physics or allied subjects.
  • Focused Research Areas:
    • Experimental Biophysical Chemistry, Experimental LASER Spectroscopy, Ultrafast LASER Spectroscopy
    • Biomedical Optics, Optical Physics, Nano-Photonics and Plasmonics
    • Mechanobiology, mechanochemical signalling, magnetic tweezer, single molecular technologies
    • Cell and molecular biology, cancer biology
  • Further Qualifications (Any One): JEST 2025 (Upto AIR 400), or CSIR-NET-JRF / UGC-NET-JRF / DBT – JRF with a valid award letter valid up to January 2026.

3. Department of Condensed Matter & Material Sciences (CMMP)

  • Basic Qualification Subjects: Masters in Science or Technology in Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Electronics, Nanotechnology, Material Sciences / BTech in Engineering Physics or allied subjects.
  • Focused Research Areas:
    • Theoretical and Computational Condensed Matter Physics, Electronic Structure
    • Electronic and magnetic properties of topological materials, Resistive memory devices for neuromorphic applications
    • Quantum many-body theory, Critical phenomena, and Quantum topological phases
    • Photoemission spectroscopy studies of topological systems

4. Department of Physics of Complex Systems (PCS)

  • Basic Qualification Subjects: Masters in Science or Technology in Physics and Applied Mathematics / BTech in Engineering Physics or allied subjects.
  • Focused Research Areas:
    • Many-body entanglement
    • Quantum many-body theory, topological phases of matter
  • Further Qualifications (Any One): JEST 2025 (Upto AIR 400), or CSIR-NET-JRF / UGC-NET-JRF with award letter valid up to January 2026.

  • Program Nature: The SNBNCBS PhD programme is strictly residential, though externally funded students may be permitted to stay off-campus by the Competent Authority.
