Eligibility Criteria for Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) PhD Admission 2025-26

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. A Master’s degree (2 years/4 semesters) after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree, or a First year/2 semester Master’s degree after a 4-year/8 semester Bachelor’s degree, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  2. A 4-year/8 semester Bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  3. Completion of the M. Phil. Programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.

Note on Relaxation: A relaxation of 5% marks (from 55% to 50%) or its equivalent grade is allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other categories, as per the decision of the Commission/UGC.

Selection Process for Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) PhD Admission 2025-26

The selection process for Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) PhD Admission 2025-26 involves an interview for JRF/NET/Equivalent test qualified/appeared candidates. The overall merit list is prepared on the basis of JRF/NET/Equivalent test scores and the marks obtained in the interview.

The overall merit list is prepared on a 100-point scale:

  • UGC-JRF/NET or Equivalent in the Concern Subject Scores: 70 Points (70 percent of JRF/NET Exam Scores)
  • Presentation of Tentative Synopsis through PPT and Interview: 30 Points
  • Total Maximum Points: 100

Interview (Step II):

  • The presentation of tentative synopsis followed by an Interview shall be organized by the concerned school of studies.
  • A research proposal in the area of the applicant’s research interest must be submitted to the interview board.
  • A power point presentation (PPT) of the said research proposal must be presented before the interview board.
  • Candidates must bring all relevant documents during the interview.

Important Tie-breaker Rule: In case of a tie, the first preference will be given to the candidate who secures a higher percentage of marks in the Post Graduate (PG) examination. If the marks secured in PG, UG, 12th class and 10th class are also the same, then the older candidate will be given priority.

*Fee Refund Policy: The Ph.D. Programme fee and the Pre-Ph.D. Course Work fee are potentially refundable based on the University’s policy. For instance, 100% refund is available if notice of withdrawal is received 15 days or more before the formally notified last date of admission/registration, while 0% refund is given if received more than 30 days after the last date.

Duration of the Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) PhD Programme

The UPRTOU Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work, and a maximum of six years duration.

All candidates admitted to the Ph. D. Programme, except those already holding an M. Phil. Degree and having cleared the M. Phil Course work with at least 55% marks, are required to complete the prescribed Pre-Ph. D. course work.

The Course work is 16 credits and requires a student to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each internal and external assessment separately and 55% of marks aggregate to successfully complete it.

Important Notes for Ph.D. Applicants

For any ambiguity in this information brochure, the UPRTOU Ph.D. Guidelines & Ordinance, available on www.uprtou.ac.in, will be final.

  • Registration: After selection in the combined merit, the candidate shall be admitted to the Pre-Ph. D. course work and will be provisionally enrolled for the Ph. D. program after approval of the research title and supervisor. The successful completion of the course work is a prerequisite.
  • Cancellation of Registration: Ph.D. registration may be cancelled for reasons including non-payment of fees, unsatisfactory progress of research, non-compliance with the ordinances, non-completion of Pre-Ph. D. course work, or failure to submit the thesis within the time limit prescribed.
  • Categories: There shall be two categories of Ph. D. candidates: Full-time and Part-time. Part-time Ph.D. is allowed for employed candidates, but the University shall obtain a “No Objection Certificate (NoC)” from the appropriate authority in the organization where the candidate is employed.
