Introduction

SSC JE 2026 is the Junior Engineer Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for recruitment to various Junior Engineer posts in Government of India organizations and offices. The tentative number of vacancies for SSC JE 2026 is 1,748.

Important: State-wise and Zone-wise vacancies are not collected by the Commission. Candidates requiring state-wise or zone-wise vacancy information should approach the concerned User Department.

SSC JE 2026 Educational Qualification

Junior Engineer (Civil)

  • Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute; or
  • Three-Year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute/Board along with the prescribed experience wherever required.

Junior Engineer (Mechanical)

  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.

Junior Engineer (Electrical)

  • Diploma/Degree in Electrical Engineering as prescribed for the concerned organization/post.

Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical)

  • Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University; or

Candidates called for Document Verification are required to produce the relevant educational qualification certificates/documents.

Engineering, Medicine, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Architecture, Physiotherapy and other prohibited disciplines obtained through Open and Distance Learning or Online mode are subject to the applicable UGC/statutory/regulatory provisions.

Nationality / Citizenship

A candidate must be either:

  1. A citizen of India; or
  2. A subject of Nepal; or
  3. A subject of Bhutan; or
  4. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates belonging to the specified categories other than Indian citizens must possess the required certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

PwBD and Disability Provisions

Except for the Border Roads Organization, the Junior Engineer posts covered under the examination have been identified as suitable for specified categories of benchmark disabilities.

The identified functional requirements and suitable disability categories vary according to the post and organization.

For eligible candidates, provisions are available for Scribe, Technology/Assistive Devices and compensatory time according to the applicable rules.

  • Compensatory time: 20 minutes per hour of examination for eligible candidates.
  • No attendant other than the permitted scribe is allowed inside the examination hall.
  • Eligible PwBD/PwD candidates using a scribe or compensatory time must produce the required supporting documents during Document Verification.
  • A candidate may use a Commission-provided scribe/technology/assistive device in the circumstances specified in the examination instructions.
BRO: Only male candidates are eligible for the Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organization.

  1. Complete the One-Time Registration (OTR) on the SSC website.
  2. Use the new SSC website for OTR and application.
  3. Log in using the Registration Number and password.
  4. Select the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 under the Live Examination section.
  5. Select the relevant post and educational qualification.
  6. Select the appropriate examination subject/stream.
  7. Enter the required educational, personal and other information.
  8. Complete the applicable fee payment.
  9. Check the Preview/Print option carefully before final submission.

Photograph and Signature Requirements

Live Photograph

  • Capture the photograph at the time of filling the application.
  • Use good lighting.
  • Use a plain background.
  • Keep the camera at eye level.
  • Face the camera directly.
  • Keep the complete face inside the prescribed camera area.
  • Do not wear a cap, mask or glasses/spectacles while capturing the photograph.
  • Do not photograph an existing photograph.

General Intelligence & Reasoning

The syllabus includes verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Areas include analogies, similarities, differences, space visualization, problem solving, analysis, judgment, decision-making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series and analytical functions.

General Awareness

Questions test general awareness of the environment around the candidate and its application to society, including current events and matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect.

General Engineering – Civil & Structural

The Civil & Structural Engineering syllabus covers the prescribed areas of civil and structural engineering at approximately Diploma level, including the technical subjects specified for the examination.

General Engineering – Electrical

The Electrical Engineering syllabus covers the prescribed electrical engineering subjects at approximately Diploma level.

General Engineering – Mechanical

The Mechanical Engineering syllabus covers the prescribed mechanical engineering subjects at approximately Diploma level.

Computer Science & Information Technology

The syllabus covers the prescribed Computer Science and Information Technology subjects at approximately graduation level.

Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

The syllabus includes Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. Physics

The Physics syllabus includes mathematical methods, calculus, integral calculus, differential equations, Fourier series, Taylor expansion, vector algebra, vector calculus, integral theorems, linear algebra, complex numbers, statistics and error analysis, along with the prescribed Physics topics.

Telecommunication

The Telecommunication syllabus includes the prescribed telecommunication engineering topics including communication systems and related technical subjects.

Standard of Questions: Engineering subjects for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical are approximately at Diploma level. Computer Science & Information Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Physics and Telecommunication subjects are approximately at graduation level.

Post and Department Preference

Candidates will provide preferences for posts and departments through the Online Option Form before the declaration of the First Round of Tentative Allocation.

  • Preferences are based on the candidate's eligibility.
  • A candidate will not be considered for a post that has not been opted for.
  • Preferences once submitted are final and irreversible.
  • Failure to submit post preference within the stipulated period results in non-consideration for final allocation.
Candidates must exercise post and department preferences carefully because the preference cannot subsequently be changed.

BRO posts have stringent physical and medical requirements, including a Physical Efficiency Test. Candidates selected for BRO must satisfy the applicable requirements.

Admit Card and Examination Centre

Admission Certificates will be made available on the SSC website. They will not be sent by post or email.

  • Candidates should regularly visit the SSC website for examination updates.
  • Examination timetable and city/centre information will be uploaded about 10 days before the examination.
  • Candidates should contact the concerned Regional Office if examination centre details are not available approximately one week before the examination.
  • Candidates should keep a printout of the Admission Certificate.
  • Candidates should retain an additional copy of the Admission Certificate for future reference.

Documents for Examination Centre

Candidates who have not undergone Aadhaar-Based Authentication must report at the examination centre two hours before the scheduled start of the examination.

They must carry:

  • Admission Certificate
  • At least two recent passport-size colour photographs
  • Original valid Photo-ID proof containing Date of Birth

Acceptable photo identity documents include:

Document Verification

Candidature is provisional at the examination stage. Detailed scrutiny of eligibility is carried out through the document verification process.

Candidates must produce certificates/documents supporting their:

Answer Key and Challenge

Tentative Answer Keys for Paper-I and Paper-II will be placed on the SSC website after the Computer Based Examination.

Candidates can submit online representations against the Answer Key within the period specified by the Commission.

The representation fee is ₹50 per question and is non-refundable.

Representations submitted through letters, applications, emails or other modes will not be entertained.

The representations will be examined before finalization of the Answer Key, and the decision of the Commission will be final.

Normalization of Marks

If an examination paper is conducted in multiple shifts, marks will be normalized according to the Commission's prescribed normalization procedure.

Electrical and Mechanical branches are normalized by treating their papers as different shifts.

For Scientific Assistant in IMD, the relevant Paper-II Parts D, E and F are also normalized by treating them as different shifts.

Only normalized Paper-II scores are used for determining final merit.

Resolution of Tie Cases

Where candidates obtain equal aggregate marks in Paper-II, the tie is resolved using the following criteria one after another:

  1. Marks in Part (i) of Paper-I
  2. Marks in Part (ii) of Paper-I
  3. Date of birth, with the older candidate placed higher
  4. Alphabetical order of the names of candidates
