Application Process
Applications for the PhD Program Phase I for 2025-26 are invited through online mode only. Other modes of application will not be accepted. The application form and the required fee can be submitted on the AKTU website, www.aktu.ac.in.
- Application Dates: August 28, 2025 to September 15, 2025.
- Application Fee:
- General/OBC candidates: Rs. 2000/-.
- SC/ST/Female/PH candidates: Rs. 1000/-.
- If a candidate applies for more than one program, they must submit a separate application form for each one.
Important: Candidates are advised to regularly check the official AKTU website for updates on the examination, results, interview schedule, document verification, and counseling. No separate letters or emails will be sent to individual candidates.
Mode of Admission
Admission to the Ph.D. program is classified into two categories: Category A and Category B.
Category A (Non-Fellowship Aspirants Only)
Candidates with a valid score in GATE, NET, CAT, CMAT, GPAT, PGETA, or another appropriate National Level Examination in the relevant discipline are exempt from the university’s entrance examination. The selection for these candidates will be based solely on an interview.

Note: Only NET Category-1 (NET JRF) qualified candidates are eligible for the UGC fellowship scheme. Candidates with NET Category-2 and Category-3 are eligible for PhD admission under the Non-fellowship scheme.
Category B (For AKTU & Non-Fellowship Aspirants)
Candidates not covered under Category A must appear in the entrance examination. This written test is a two-hour, multiple-choice objective test with 100 questions. Fifty questions will be on Research Methodology and fifty will be subject-specific. The syllabus for subject-specific papers will be based on GATE/GPAT/NET/CAT/PGETA or other appropriate National Level Examinations.
Shortlisted candidates from the written exam will be called for an interview. The final merit list for Category B will be based on 70% weightage for the written exam and 30% for the interview.
Candidates under Category B are eligible for the AKTU Homi Bhabha Teaching Assistantship scheme, depending on the number of available seats. This fellowship is offered only for the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, and Faculty of Architecture & Planning.
Important: A candidate who falls under Category “A” but wishes to apply for the AKTU Fellowship must apply under Category “B” and appear in the written examination.
Examination Details
- Examination Date (Tentative): September 27, 2025.
- Time: 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
- Exam Type: Offline / OMR pattern, multiple choice questions.
- Number of Questions: 100 objective type questions.
- Scoring:
- 4 marks will be awarded for each correct answer.
- There will be no negative marking.
- No marks will be deducted for un-attempted or wrongly attempted questions.
- Tie-Breaking Rule: In case of a tie in marks, the candidate with fewer wrong answers will be ranked higher.
- Examination City: The written test will tentatively be held in Lucknow, but this may change based on the number of applicants.
- Admit Cards: Admit cards will be available online from September 22, 2025 (tentatively). The downloaded admit card is valid and must be preserved until the admission process is complete.

The minimum eligibility conditions for admission to Ph.D. programmes are prescribed by the Academic Council of the University.

Reservation Policy
- Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination from an institution in U.P. and are domiciled in U.P. and belong to SC, ST, or OBC of U.P. are eligible for reserved category benefits.
- Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination from an institution outside U.P. but whose parents are domiciled in U.P. and who belong to SC, ST, or OBC of U.P. are also eligible for reserved category benefits.
- A 5% relaxation in marks or an equivalent grade relaxation may be given to SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/differently-abled candidates in academic eligibility.
- The OBC category certificate must be issued after April 1, 2025, to be produced at the time of document verification.
