For VRET Category
The following categories of qualifications are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme:
- A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree programme.
- A 2-year/4-semester master's degree programme after a 3-year bachelor's degree programme.
- Qualifications declared equivalent to the master's degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body.
The candidate must have at least 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade wherever a grading system is followed.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, EWS and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
A candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. A relaxation of 5% may be allowed for the specified categories.
M.Phil. Qualification
Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade are eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. The document also provides for the applicable 5% relaxation for the specified categories.
Under the VRET-Exempted Category, eligible applicants are exempted from the VRET but are required to appear for an interview conducted by the DRC.

Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya allows International Students and Working Professionals to apply under the admission notice. Such candidates may apply through the VRET-Exempted Category, subject to the applicable provisions.
For International Students, each supervisor can guide up to two international research scholars on a supernumerary basis over and above the permitted number of Ph.D. scholars, subject to the stated provisions.
Part-Time Ph.D. for Working Professionals
Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode are permitted provided all conditions stipulated in the Ph.D. Regulations are fulfilled.
The concerned department shall obtain a No-Objection Certificate in the prescribed format through the candidate from the appropriate authority of the organisation where the candidate is employed. The certificate should clearly state that:
- The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
- The candidate's official duties permit sufficient time for research.
- If required, the candidate will be relieved from duty to complete the course work.
The Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya GGU PhD Admission 2026-27 process has two streams: VRET and VRET-Exempted.

For VRET seats, the University will admit applicants through a two-stage process consisting of an entrance test followed by an interview. The qualifying marks for the Entrance Test are 50%.
The VRET syllabus consists of 50% research methodology and 50% subject-specific content. The examination is of 120 minutes duration and consists of a single question paper of 100 marks containing 100 multiple-choice questions.
Admission is based on marks obtained above the qualifying marks in VRET and the order of merit. A 5% relaxation in the entrance examination is allowed for the specified reserved and other categories according to the applicable Commission decisions.

The final selection based on the entrance test gives 70% weightage to the VRET marks and 30% weightage to performance in the interview/viva-voce.

For candidates having a score in UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE and similar applicable examinations, the merit calculation is based on:
- 70% weightage of the normalized score.
- 30% weightage of Personal Interview/Viva-voce.

The admission document states that the above calculation may also be used for all types of applicants if marks in other defined categories are not available for preparation of the merit list.
The final merit lists for VRET and VRET-Exempted applicants are prepared separately for each subject. The overall marks for preparing the merit are 100.
The shortlisting of applications for VRET and VRET-Exempted applicants for the concerned subjects is carried out separately by the Admission Committee constituted for the concerned department or Research Centre.
The concerned department committee shortlists applications according to the applicable shortlisting criteria described in the Regulations and Admission Brochure. The University may notify modifications in the shortlisting criteria where considered necessary.
The DRC prepares category-wise VRET and VRET-Exempted merit lists. The final selection list is displayed on the University's website as well as on the departmental Notice Board.
All provisionally admitted students have to undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester, equivalent to six months, or as prescribed by the UGC from time to time.
A temporary mentor will be allotted to students by the DRC and approved by the Dean before the beginning of the course work. As far as possible, the mentor will be the supervisor to whom the student will be allotted after successful completion of the course work.
The course work is treated as Pre-Ph.D. preparation and includes three papers carrying a total of 12 credits.

All applicants admitted to the Ph.D. programme are required to successfully complete the prescribed Pre-Ph.D. course work. If a student is unable to qualify after the second attempt, the admission will be cancelled automatically.
If a student fails the course work examination in the first attempt, only one additional attempt is provided after payment of the applicable fees. Successful completion of course work is binding on all Ph.D. students, including VRET and VRET-Exempted applicants.
Ph.D. scholars, except International Students and Working Professionals, are also required to undergo training in teaching, education, pedagogy or writing related to their chosen Ph.D. subject. Scholars may also be assigned 4–6 hours per week of teaching/research assistantship for tutorial or laboratory work and evaluations.
Reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PWD applicants will be provided according to Government of India rules.
SC/ST/OBC/EWS applicants must submit a copy of the relevant certificate showing their category. The certificate will be subject to verification by the concerned District Magistrate.
The admission notice specifies authorities empowered to issue the required certificates, including District Magistrate/Additional District Magistrate/Collector/Deputy Commissioner and other specified magistrate, revenue and administrative authorities.

The Vishwavidyalaya Research Entrance Test will be conducted at the Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur campus.
The entrance test is to be conducted offline. Candidates appearing for VRET must carry the valid admit card and occupy the seat allotted according to their roll number.
- A question booklet and a separate OMR answer sheet will be provided.
- Candidates should check the question booklet within 10 minutes of receiving it.
- Roll Number, Question Booklet Number and Set Number, where applicable, must be entered in the prescribed places.
- Blue or black ball-point pen must be used as specified.
- Each question has four alternative answers.
- Only the selected answer should be marked on the OMR sheet.
- Marking more than one circle or improper marking will result in the answer being treated as incorrect.
- There is no negative marking.
- An unattempted question receives zero marks.
- No page from the question booklet may be torn or removed.
Items Not Allowed in the Examination Hall
The document states that calculators, watch calculators, electronic diaries, pagers, mobile phones, earphones, alarm clocks, digital watches with memory, slide rules and similar prohibited items are not allowed in the examination hall.

Non-NET Fellowship for VRET-Exempted Candidates

Candidates admitted to Ph.D. programmes in Engineering & Technology, Management or Computer Science departments approved by AICTE to postgraduate level may be eligible for AICTE Doctoral Fellowship (ADF) 2025-26, subject to the stated eligibility criteria and approval or sanction by AICTE.
Results of VRET will be declared on the University's website. The admission document states that no queries regarding the result will be entertained.
