About BMI Calculator
The BMI Calculator by Neucademy is a free, fast, and accurate online tool that helps you calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) within seconds. It supports both the Metric (kilograms and centimeters) and Imperial (pounds, feet, and inches) measurement systems, making it suitable for users worldwide. Simply enter your gender (male or female), age, height, and weight, choose your preferred unit system, and the calculator will instantly display your BMI value along with your corresponding weight category.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used health screening tool that estimates whether your body weight is appropriate for your height. Although BMI does not directly measure body fat percentage, it is commonly used by healthcare professionals, fitness experts, and public health organizations to assess potential weight-related health risks.

- For adults (20 years and above), automatic BMI classification based on WHO standards (Underweight, Normal Weight, Overweight, Obesity).

- Accurate calculations based on internationally accepted BMI formulas.
- No registration or login required.
- Completely free to use.
How Age and Gender Are Used
Age and gender do not change the BMI formula. The BMI calculation remains the same for everyone. However, for children and adolescents, BMI-for-age growth charts are based on biological sex (male or female), which is why the calculator asks for your gender to provide age-appropriate guidance.
- Adults (20 years and above): BMI is calculated using the standard equation and classified into adult BMI categories.
- Children and adolescents (2–19 years): BMI is calculated using the same formula, but the result is not interpreted using adult BMI categories. Instead, it should be compared with age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts because body composition changes during growth and differs between boys and girls.
- Gender: The calculator asks for gender (male or female) because BMI-for-age growth charts for children and adolescents are based on biological sex. This information is used only to provide age-appropriate guidance and does not change the BMI calculation itself.
This approach follows the principles described in the ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024), which emphasize that BMI in children and adolescents should always be interpreted using age- and sex-specific growth references.
BMI Calculation Formulas
The calculator automatically applies the correct formula depending on the unit system selected.
| Measurement System | BMI Formula |
|---|---|
| Metric System | BMI = Weight (kg) [Height (m)]2 |
| Imperial System | BMI = 703 × Weight (lb) [Height (in)]2 |
BMI Categories (for Adults ≥ 20 years)
| BMI Range | Weight Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal Weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and Above | Obesity |
Note: The BMI categories shown above apply only to adults aged 20 years and above. For children and adolescents (2–19 years), BMI should be interpreted using age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age growth charts rather than adult BMI categories.

Disclaimer: BMI is a useful screening tool but should not be used as the sole indicator of an individual's overall health. Factors such as age, sex, muscle mass, body composition, ethnicity, pregnancy, and certain medical conditions may influence health beyond BMI alone. For children and adolescents (2–19 years), BMI should always be interpreted using age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age growth charts.
