📋 Categories of Admission

Applicants for the Ph.D. programme shall be classified under any one of the following categories:

  1. Institute Research student/candidate (Full Time)
  2. Full Time externally funded students (UGC, CSIR, GPAT, SERB, DST, PMRF etc.)
  3. External Project funding (Full Time)
  4. Off Campus – External
  5. Off Campus – Part time
  6. Institute Staff*

🎓 Eligibility Criteria for Regular (Full Time) Ph.D.

Applicants for the IIT Jammu PhD Admission 2025-26 must meet one of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. A Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology along with a good academic record.
  2. OR A Master’s degree in Science (with a good academic record) and a valid GATE / UGC-CSIR NET (JRF or LS) /GPAT/ NBHM/ICMR (JS) / ICAR (JS) or equivalent qualification in the relevant area, tenable for the year of registration.
  3. OR A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with an exceptional academic record and a valid GATE score in the eligible discipline/paper code.
  4. OR Exemption for GATE under schemes agreed by the IIT Council for students of NITs/IITs/IIITS/IISERS/IISc may be acceptable. The candidate should have a minimum of 8.0 CGPA during the B.Tech program from these institutes.
Note on NET (LS) & Fellowship: UGC-CSIR NET Lectureship (LS) can be used as a selection criterion if the candidate qualifies for the interview-cum-selection process at the department level, and Institute fellowship may be granted to such candidates.

Eligibility for Off Campus – External

The minimum qualification for these candidates is the same as for full-time regular candidates. Additionally, candidates must fulfill these conditions:

  • Must be a regular full-time employee in a government institution/R&D organization/relevant private industries.
  • Must be sponsored by their employer and have been in employment for at least two years at the time of admission.
  • The sponsoring organization(s) should sign a MoU with IIT Jammu.
  • The employer must expressly undertake to relieve the candidate to stay on campus to complete the Course work (up to 3 semesters) and attend evaluation presentations.
  • Candidate should have a minimum residency period of one semester on campus.
  • Candidate should have well-established research facilities on the parent campus, as the majority of research work shall be carried out there.
  • Candidate should have one supervisor from the parent organization who is a doctorate in the relevant field.

Eligibility for Off Campus – Part time

The minimum qualification is the same as for full-time regular candidates. Additional criteria include:

  • Must be a regular full-time employee in a government institution/R&D organization/relevant private industries/CRPF/Indian Armed Forces.
  • The parent organization should be located in the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh regions only.
  • The employer must undertake to relieve the candidate to complete the “Course work” and attend the evaluation presentations at the end of every semester.
  • A candidate must spend at least 6 weeks per semester on the IIT campus to work.
  • Part-time PhD candidates will utilize the research infrastructure of IIT Jammu for their thesis, and a supervisor at the parent organization is not mandatory.

The application fee must be deposited using net banking or debit/credit card facilities, as no other mode is accepted.

⚠️ Important Instructions

  • Candidates are requested to apply online only; hard copies of the application will not be accepted.
  • Departments/Centers reserve the right to restrict the number of candidates called for an interview based on qualifications and/or experience; a higher shortlisting criteria may be used.
  • Online application submitted by the candidates shall be considered final and binding. Requests for making corrections will not be entertained.
  • Online applications found incomplete in any form will be summarily rejected.
  • All correspondence, including the Test/Interview schedule, will be made by the Institute through the candidate’s registered e-mail address.
  • Candidates belonging to OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST/DAP should have appropriate category certificates issued by the central government only.
  • For OBC-NCL and EWS, the respective Income & Assets or Non-Creamy Layer certificate must be issued in the latest Financial Year and uploaded online.
